Biyang fuzz pedals - differences between them?

Post by Krunch »

Hi!

Biyang FZ-10 Fuzz Star ("BabyBoom" series)
Biyang FZ-12 Fuzz ("Classic" series)
Biyang FZ-7 Fuzz ("Tonefancier" series)

-- Does anybody know if there are differences between these 3 Biyang fuzzes or are they the same circuit just in different housings? The switches & stuff would suggest the latter?

I just like the snazzy chrome polish of the Tonefancier one, but it's model number "FZ-7" implies it is an older circuit, and maybe the Classic "FZ-12" is an updated, perhaps improved, version? Does anyone know?

thanks --

Likely that they are all the exact same

A friend of mine had the Chrome one and the smaller size Fuzz Star and they sounded identical to me - he bought the Chrome one originally, then switched to the Fuzz Star because it is half the size of the chrome one. They sound a little bit normal for my tastes, but they are good standard fuzzes. No idea about the middle one, but I suspect it would be the same.

I would choose the one in the middle because it's purple, but the bizarrely named "Baby Boom!" one looks nice too. :snax:

I'd probably go for the most compact option. Is the circuit based on a Muff?

It's a Muff. I have the Akai-branded version of the FZ7. By the values of the through-hole caps, something in the zone of a triangle or ram's head. (I can't remember if the resistors are marked but too small for my old ass eyes or unmarked.). Only mod of major significance is the clipping switch. The diode lift position is pretty rad for bass Muff-ing. In standard mode it sounds a lot like my old NY Muff that I sold in the 90s. (Whoops.)

Ok thanks for that! I see them pretty cheap here so might go the Classic FZ-12... only because it has the highest number lol. (I'm in this cheap Chinese fuzz phase atm heh)...

I am looking for a particular fuzz sound tho'... the endless quest ha... I'll save that for another post.
