Most Versatile Delays?

The Timeline to me sounds anything but organic. It sounds cold and mechanical IMO.

Now the Boss DD 500 sounds way better and is cheaper and has a looper.

I owned both.

To me when you're looking for an organic delay, I'd check how the modulations are. But the modulations on the Boss are nuts.

Having those units + H9 let me know I didn't need a versatile delay but just something with character, good modulations if I need and a tap tempo.

Hey, mr. Furtkamp sir, what's the max delay time on the RE20? I tried one in a store once, but can't remember.

201s are fun, but are NOT maintenance free (to you, and to somebody who can go under the hood). You'll have to commit to keeping it flying under band and practice conditions, etc.

What I can tell you is that for 98-99% of what I can get out of a real tape SE, the RE-20 does in "standard" mode as shipped from the factory (it has a "long delay" option you can set on power up, but I just can't gel with it).

I've kept my RE-150 (because I use two head over three the vast majority of the time anyway, and it has a preamp that's of the 301 era) but I can do 98% of the servicing it needs myself (I did SS 'plex and Space Echo overhauls in the early 90s when nobody would touch 'em), but it gets used less and less.

The RE-20 even gets "It's running away into oscillation but not fully taking off, but there's still delay of incoming signal too" down pat.

It's not "versatile" in that it does what it does, but I have other delays for that.

RE-150 is actually what I have been looking at. I have no practices or gigs to consider, just bedroom recording use, and i've worked on many a tape deck and 4 tracks. Good to know self maintenance can be done.

My good friend has a RE-20. I like them and was considering one when making this thread, but idk how it compares to the real thing at the end of the day. Sounds like it's pretty close.

I went with an RE -150....hard to pass up when cheaper than a Timeline. Not exactly "versatile" but sound quality is top priority for me atm and why emulate when I have the space and time to use the real thing.

Yep, the 150 is a fine, fine thing.

I am immensely happy with mine.

Later transport/preamp so much lower maintenance than the early models, uses the same loops as a 201/301 if you're lazy and buy off the shelf.
