NPD: Gray Channel
I played one yesterday and had to go back for it today. A whole lot of variations to be had with this one...
Two things surprised me: first, that it's marketed as an overdrive. I guess it technically is since it's based on the DOD OD/Preamp circuit, but the silicon and germanium diode settings on the green side have a lot more fuzz character. The no-diode setting is far and away my favorite though, and it's much more like an OD. It's super clear and can be a bit piercing, but it has such a nice presence. And it's fucking LOUD. The FET setting sounds like something in between the squishier/fuzzier si and ge.
The cool thing is that to my ears, the no-diode setting is the same on either side, so you can dial in a clear OD on one side and a fuzzier tone on the other, each with its own volume (this obviously being key, since the no-diode setting is so loud).
So yep, stoked as fuck on this one. Will post some samples if I get some time after wrapping up the Open Source Collab.

That sounds awesome. I've been using one of the new DOD 250 for a bit and with the gain turned up there's a fuzz-like quality to that one too. I'm interested in trying the Gray Channel.

I've been thinking about running this and an Empress EQ w/ boost to replace my palisades. This seem to have a huge range in tones and has the clear and saturated character that I love. Or eschew the EQ and get a Bows.popvulture wrote:I played one yesterday and had to go back for it today. A whole lot of variations to be had with this one...

Really thought I wanted one, love the sound in the demos, but I get a little frustrated when I can't EQ the shit out of my overdriven sound. I kind of hate thay EQD completely forego tone controls on their pedals. EQUALISATION DICK more like. oops

I cordially invite you to fuck right off and let the rest of us talk about music like adults.- dubkitty

Re: NPD: Gray Channel
I agree. That said, I think they were just keeping with the original design of the DOD, which had no tone. Despite that, the sound doesn't lean harsh or bassy, and in a way I kinda dig the uber simplicity of it. On that note though,Dungus wrote:Really thought I wanted one, love the sound in the demos, but I get a little frustrated when I can't EQ the shit out of my overdriven sound. Having an EQ in your chain would obviously be great, especially considering they give you a lot more control than the single tone knob most ODs have.Inconuucl wrote:Thus my want to add an Empress eq go my chain.
I don't think I'd have this as my primary OD, although you never know. My first instinct would be to use something like a Mini or a KoT as a main OD sound, then use the N setting on one side as a boost or alt OD, and the other side as a fuzz.

Daily reminder that a DOD250 dimed is the sound of the first three OM records.

I really want one of these as I LOVE the 250. I just ordered a Spires instead because I have a DOD250 and had a few fuzz holes to fill. Gray Channel will probably be my next purchase though. I love EQD (partially because I have an Ohio bias).

I just threw mine onto a smaller board as a second dirt option, and unsurprisingly found that it adds a ton of additional tonal options with just one pedal. Super fun to have on there.

Love my Gray Channel. I have it set on fairly low gain Germanium as an 'always on' after my Rat Tail, and then switch over to higher gain on the red channel for a little boost/heaviness.

I wish the two channels were stackable. I mean c'mon, why not?
