Recommend me pedals - new home pedalboard

Post by samzadgan »

I want to put together a small pedalboard for home use, as my main one is too big and unwieldy to use at home.

So looking for recommendations for new pedals to purchase for this board. Only brand exceptions are Black Arts Toneworks and EQD...my main board is littered with these and I have some spare ones too...

The pedalboard will have 6 pedals:
Overdrive
Distortion
Phaser
Delay
Reverb

extra spot, either another Reverb or Fuzz or another modulation

I will playing through a Matchless Lightning clone and I dont like multi-effects, I prefer normal pedals...and I play anything from very clean, stoner, to doom to drone and ambient.

Overdrive: Fairfield Barbershop, SS/BS Fuck/Mini, DOD Boneshaker maybe? Maybe a DOD 250 if you're looking for cheaper stuff.

Distortion: Again, Mini would probably handle this well. Earthbound Audio Supercollider or the '71 maybe? Idiotbox Blower Box or Dungeon Master? Mantic Vitriol looks awesome too. I know you said no EQD but the Bellows sounds fun.

Phaser: Not my bag, baby. Just buy a wombtone. INFANEM Faye Sing was pretty cool too.

Delay: INFANEM small Echo Array. Moog MF Delay. DD-500 or maybe El Capistan?

Reverb: Dr. Scientist Reverberator. RM-1N. Caroline Meteore. Catalinbread topanga for springy stuff? DBA reverb?

For the extra spot why not a looper or a pitch shifter? Ditto X2 or an EHX Pitchfork or the new Digitech Ricochet. For modulation maybe a vibrato or flanger? Warped Vinyl? Alexander F.13? LAL Misty Cave?

For phaser and flanger, I really like my MXR script Phase 90, and Mr. Black Tunnel Worm and Shepard's End. Those Mr. Black pedals are two compact, simple, great sounding Through Zero flangers-Tunnel Worm is more normal, Shepard's End is more wacky and trippy. Both definitely have to be placed after dirt.

MR Black has to make its way on to this board...i was thinking on the reverb side...but i do really like the sound of that tunnel worm too

Ha, I just reread your first post and realized you weren't asking for a flanger. For some reason I thought you were. It's late-I should go to bed.

Since I'm into similar styles, and also prefer my pedals to be easy to use and straight forward, I'll chime in :)

You'll get more than enough suggestions for dirt pedals, so I'm not gonna drop the names of my favorites here. I just think there's not much need to go boutique if you're looking for a good simple od/dist sound. A dod/rat/mxr/ehx/boss/way huge drive pedal on yer board might cost ya a couple ilf credidibility points in the 'show yer peddleboard thread', but they get the job done and won't break the bank :idk:

Having said that, EQD builds a drive pedal for everyone, and they're not even that pricey.

And if we're counting muff type fuzzes as distorion here, there's this one boutique pedal that I remember being pretty fucking impressive: Musket. Could have done with at least one control less, but other than that the only reason I sold it was that I'm not that into the smooth gilmour-esque sort of muff tone. Not that that's the only thing the Musket can do, it was just overkill for my neeeds.

I like to keep it simple in the phaser departement too. The only good reason to go with something fancier than a small stone, would be if you need extra controls and options. The basic swoooosh of a good old small stone is hard beat if you ask me. Having said that, I'm rockin an old DOD FX20, which as I understand it is similar to the small stone, with an actual control for the fx level. It can be found for ridiculous prices too, that doesn't hurt either I guess :p

Don't know what you're looking for in those delay/verb pedal, but I'm personally looking forward to the EQD Avalanche Run. Don't need all that tweakability, don't wanna spend that much space nor monies: A good old RV-3 won't let you down for clear pristine delays or decent hall/plate type reverbs. It's proven itself to be the perfect ambient/shoegaze/postrock pedal a zillion times, who am I to argue with that, right?

The RM-1N seems rad. But really, $300 for a reverb pedal? Unless misty washy noisy experimental shit is your core business, a large versatile pedal like that won't stay on your board for longer than the honeymoon phase, right?

For non-typical trippy reverbs I like the EQD Afterneath, though it's making me miss a good convincing plate/hall emulating reverb :idk:

My go-to analog delay these days is the Ibanez ES-2. The tap tempo could be better, and I can't vouch for the build quality, which I'm sure is a lot better on boutique pedals...But for the money, there's not much out there with the same specs/features.

Hehe, I was only half-kidding with that remark, but still...People seem to overlook the classics and look down on off the shelf kind of brands.
There's not much science to building a drive pedal, but people keep going apeshit over every new hip fuzz clone that comes out.

If anything, the ILF crowd is pretty cool about it though. We all have this nerdy pedal fetish, but there's no cork sniffy tgp vibe here or anything. I just made it my job to sing the Boss/EHX praise to remind people ya can't really re-invent the wheel, you can only put in a couple extra spokes and maybe paint it a new color or somthing, but still...:idk:

I'll get of my soapbox now, srry :p

:thumb: all good man.

i really dont want to spend much money on this board either...so it may have one or 2 more expensive cool pedal's, but the rest will be bread an butter type pedals.

Skip the phaser and get an mxr flanger. The little evh one is nice - it's the same as normal but more expensive and with fancy paint and an instant evh button. Regardless of what you think of his playing his flanger tone is fucking spot on.

Distortion: digitech death metal. You can mod it with an input level control, or just use the volume knob on your guitar to clean it up. Sounds good live and at bedroom levels!

Verb: RRR, as has already been stated. So good.
Delay: Caroline kilobite. Does standard sounds, has a momentary oscillation stomp and can also get grungy and has subtle to less subtle modulation. Awesome pt delay.
Overdrive: Fuzzhugger arc flash. Or a boss xt-2. As a distortion it is a bit odd (but cool) but man, with the gain down it sounds just like a cranked five watt fender. Love it.

There's perhaps a few different suggestions for you.

Overdrive: Tube Screamer Variant? I mean, you are playing a Matchless Clone. :P I've been jamming a Way Huge Green Rhino and I find it to be quite satisfying. I was playing it with my Mesa F-100 yesterday and it gave me a nice boosted sound (TS Style, Volume 10 Gain 0 Tone Noon/to Taste). OCD is also probably a really good choice, maybe even the best choice because it can do OD/Distortion.

Distortion: I mean, OCD is pretty great. OCD and a Fuzz could be dope. So do you go fuzz here? SS/BS Buzzzz could be a good option. Lots of sounds plus you get that Octave in there if desired.

Phaser: I have a hard-on for the Whetstone. That would be my pick. Big box, I realize, but there are a lot of sounds in there outside of the normal whoosh. Can do subtle and over-the-top-ish, in my opinion.

Reverb: Can't attest to the RRR because I haven't used it. I realize you don't want more EQD but we all praise the Ghost Echo. I'm super partial to the Blackout Effectors Cadavernous. Haven't tried the v2 yet, which seems sick. I just love the swell switch. Great for "building/vamping" into parts and some between song noise but I love to swell during clean parts and let it decay between chords.

Delay: Carbon Copy/Carbon Copy clone? What do you want in a delay. If I were going HAM on a delay it'd either be an Avalanche Run or a Source Audio Nemesis. I'd honestly probably just go straight to the Nemesis.

Last Spot: BitQuest or GTFO. I know you don't want a multi-fx but BitQuest is other-fucking-wordly. Great delay, reverb, bit crusher and it can do a bunch of other useful sounds. Plus, think of the ILF Cred.

:excellent:

don't know why i never checked out the Bit Quest...i could easily have two on my board...one fore reverb and one for everything else it does!

I'm doing a similar thing! Decided on a DOD250 for OD, because it's cheap and people seem to like it. Personally I like my barber ltd sr, which is a flat eq low gain drive that is really good.

Distortion: Maybe a Rat? Or a Supercollider!

Fuzz (for the extra spot): Ghost effects Buzzaround has gotten my attention lately, check it out!

Phaser: I don't know much about phasers, but the whetstone sounds fuckin rad.

Reverb: I decided on a Ghsot echo, but since you don't want EQD I'm gonna suggest Recovery FX Endless summer mkII just to say something else

Delay: EL CAP!! Does good reverb too, so you get both. You can get a freakier reverb (like the recovery) and be all good. Plus, mix all the way up, delay time down, wow&flutter up, and you've got a lofi-modulation thing.
