ModTone FX anyone?

Post by Big Mon »

I am intrigued by these things, the chorus and the phaser in particular. Does anyone have any experience with these cheap pedlulz? As far as modulation goes,EHX would get most of my money if I had a ton of money to spend. ILF,your thoughts, plz :poke:

From a little look, a few problems with some of the effects:
-Lack of output (might not be an issue, depends on your set up, but may require the pedal being modded) that was with the Speedbox though but it shows they might not take care with the designs (but EHX has released several pedals with volume drops)
-Apparently the Chorus is quite noisey... wether this was accross all units or someone just had a specifically noisy one, I couldn't say but it's something to look out for.
-Everything is board mounted... this means over time the PCB will probably crack from jacks wiggling etc... not great, but found in alot of pedals.

Otherwise, lookin' all good to me for the price, most likely clones of pedals like EHX, BOSS etc. anyway.

Yeah that's the thing, look good/sound good. But the diminutive pricetag makes me suspect shoddy workmanship, especially after Scruff's analysis. Jury's still out for me.

I bought the deepdive as a backup for my mxr bass octave, and it works well enough. The octave actually sounds a bit richer than the mxr version, but that's due to the filters, which are bypassable for a cool eight bit square wave sound. I don't think I'd buy any of the rest of their series though, there are a lot of gearmandude demos that compare these to electro harmonix, mxr and some others.

They seem alright but I really hate how the phaser sounds. Way to shrill and thin, like a cheap EQ being swept back and forth

Don't be entirely put off, larger companies have put out worse, but I just don't think they're gunna be awesome but they're probably gigable... see if you can try one out in a shop.

The EHX Nano Chorus has volume drop too apparently so even that's not the best option, infact it probably ties with that unit, actually, one of the best budget choruses at the moment is probably the Dan Electro Cool Cat Chorus, Sounds Great, Metal Enclosure, True bypass, only issue with it is the knobs on the back are a bit awkward and the switch isn't going to last a life time but still pretty damn good.

Phaser wise, Behringer have a range of EHX clones out that might be alright, I haven't really looked at them... metal enclosure though (cause I know everyone fears there plastic ones) -
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/VP1.aspx (Obviosuly a Small Stone)
Probably quite easy to have someone on here True Bypass it for you too because Behringer bypass do suck (this one especially has clock bleed etc. so you would have to have this done to it, afterwards though, nice unit for cheap)

There's also alot of Biyang units for cheap on the Bay... might be something to look into, they claim True Bypass etc.

Just some ideas for budget pedals, take it all with a pinch of salt and wot not.
