Fuzz to go with a Rat

Hey there,

So I looking to finally get my first fuzz pedal. Currently I'm using a ProCo rat for Distortion with an LBP-1 for overdrive, and I'm looking for fuzz to go with it. I like the rat for how defined and articulate the thing is. What I want in a fuzz is something that will contrast with that, hairy, sloppy, disgusting but something I can still mash simple chords on. Price range is under 115 or so. Bonus points if it stacks well with the rat.

If by simple chords you mean just power chords, I'd try out an octave fuzz for the grossness. There are plenty of superfuzz and tone machine variants at that price point.

IMOP best classic combo to stack with a RAT is a Big Muff.. there are tons of variants and clones to have fun looking at

RAT>Pharaoh does the trick for me. It's versatile enough that I don't really GAS for any other dirt.

I'd second the recommendation to try an octave fuzz. Even a low-gain octave fuzz like a Green Ringer may complement your existing setup well if you're looking to build upon the existing Rat tone. An LPB1>Octave Fuzz>Rat or Octave Fuzz>LPB1>Rat signal chain would likely sound brutal stacked, or there's always the Octave Fuzz>Rat>LPB1 option for an occasional volume boost for leads and/or octave noise freakouts.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with the old rat+muff combo. The rat can tighten up the messy whooly muff, the muff adds a bit of hair and sizzle to the Rat...Definatelly worth trying some sort of muff imo.

But I'd still second the octave fuzz recommendation. A tone machine or superfuzz type circuit is A LOT more fun too mess with imo, especially paired with a distoriton like the rat.

Dirt cheap and so-so build quality tone machine clones: Dano French Toast, Joyo ultimate octave (the latter is supposedly a small mod away from being a straight tone machine clone).
Dirt cheap super fuzz clones: FZ-2 (wouldn't call it a clone though, sounds a bit different, I actually prefer it over 'good' clones. Behringer has as cheaper -shitty- version of the FZ-2. Other options for more vintage-y sounding fy-2 type effects that cost close to nothing used: Malekko omicron, BYOC Leeds, Guyatone TZ-2,...

The options for muffs are endless, even more so than it's the case with octave fuzz peds. As far as cheap ones go (my area of expertise), I'd say the Ibanez SF5 '60s fuzz is pretty killer.
It's hard NOT to get lost in the hunt for THE perfect muff clone. You'll find yourself changing big muffs more often than you change your underware. Mids control, clipping options, boosted low end,...Everyone and their mother builds a nice variation of one of the many original big muff versions, they're like the tubescreamer of the none-blues playing dudes. My advice: Keep it simple, don't get caught up in that whole game, it'll leave you spending more time on CL/ebay than on your music. /lecture. Srry

Newer bootique stuff is usually easier to come by than the trashy old junk I'm refering to, and probably a bit better in every way (true bypass, better build quality and qc, more controls/switches,...).

I personally always lean towards several cheapish thrift store type of slutty pedlols instead of one purty boutque one

Sounds amazing, can get really clear with chords if you want and relatively cheap.

But big muffs would of course also work. If I were to buy a muff right now I'd buy a earthbound supercollider

Rat feeding the input of a muff is a classic. The frequency response of the rat compliments the big muff scoop considerably well.

Rat and ANYTHING is awesome. Outside of a Muff, try a buzzier fuzz like a Fuzz Mutant/Regulus VIII.

I've recently used a Mooer Fog with a Mooer Black Secret and I've been impressed with the results. Perhaps a Woolly Mammoth (clone) would be worth considering.

so basically a friend of mine indefinitely lent me a Fender Blender reissue (with the octave up). Stacks really well with rat goes you dial in just a little bit at a time with the blend knob but it took a while to find the right setting. Adds everything I wanted (broken sounding, harsh treble, lots and lots of low end).
