Then I'll have a gigable amp setup that weighs less than ten pounds and costs around $300 new.


Also, the lunchbox is loud, but as soon as you turn it up enough to be heard with a drummer, you're going to lose allllllll the lows you had. Also, it's a digital amp, and I definitely noticed some fidelity loss when I was using it. It is stupidly portable, though.

What about one of those modern compact bass heads? They all look small and light enough to fit in a backpack or gigbag and can be paired with the cab of your choosing.

If you want easy to carry, Earcandy makes/made a 2x8 cab with a handle - so did Fender, the ultralight? Or maybe one of the Raezer's edge cabs? Those are marketed to the jazz cat set, so they are likely to be light weight, wide response, and designed for SS heads.

100w clean power, good reviews at least as far as jazz guitar is concerned, fits in a backpack, they have an australian distributor, etc.

i'd love one of those kinda cabs but i'm having a lot of trouble finding anything, the cab selection of retailers in australia in general is terrible.
i've played 1x12s and i know a lot of the budget ones are too bulky for what i need this time around. then my other options are basically an overpriced hughes & kettner 1x10 cab or the micro terror 1x8.
importing something like one of those awesome raezer's edge cabs would cost like $1000 on its own, almost, hence that DV mark combo looking like a pretty obvious solution at $600.

It really depends on how loud it must be, how loud the drummer is you're playing with.
Personally I wouldn't go for anything smaller than 10" especially if that's the only speaker you're going to use.
The Fender Princeton Reissue comes to mind as a great 1x10" combo but I think it won't be loud enough.
So yeah, back to solidstate then I guess.
DV Mark seems really really bad from what I heard in video's, those Mark Bass amps are pretty crap too, especially the speakers, besides they're all Class D, if you come from old school transistor amps I don't think you're going to like it.

I can tell you a Champ won't cut it clean, even with a high efficiency speaker.

Look if you can find it for a JC-50/55/60 (1x12) vintage Jazz Chorus.

Louder than sin, and cheap as hell in this era of modelling stuff.

Speaking of that, could go with a Fender Mustang III (1x12), it's light, set it to have a couple presets for clean/cleanish stuff, treat it as a regular amp, profit.

Cheap too.

I love my Mustang V.

mm, i have been, i just really want to try one before buying because if it isn't loud enough or it feels too bulky i'd be disappointed.

a JC-50 or something like rfurt suggested would probably be ideal because the size to power ratio is a bit better, but i have basically no chance of finding one here. last time i saw one was a bit over a year ago and it was overpriced and interstate. the used market is seriously depressing.

i think i might try and go to a store and try out the cheap stuff just to see whether any of it actually tickles my fancy. worth a shot.

thanks man, i don't wanna make any regrettable decisions seeing as i won't really have any money left after doing this so this is all good to consider.
the old school transistor sound is definitely what i love. once i had a JC-120 and YTA-95 i completely lost interest in other amps. stuff like the DV mark amps seem very clean and full from demos but it lacks the EQ character of the solid state amps i do like and i'm pretty sure pedals would sound like shit.
it wouldn't need to keep up with a really loud drummer and i can use a rat as a mostly clean treble boost to push through the mix, but yeah. i think i would want 50-60w if going solid state.

This! I do this when I have to bring my own amp to gigs/jams.
I have a Traynor TS-25 as my "small, loud amp". It is not super clean all the way, but it sounds good all the way. Thinking about swapping the speaker, hopefully that will make it sound even better.

Has also used the ZT Lunchbox AND the Club 12 combos. They are lightweight and loud and sound OK.
I prefer the sound of the Lunchbox, but you will miss some low end when it is a drummer volume. The Club 12 has more low end, but sounds a little "boxy".

I was at my local guitar shop a couple of days ago, and they had these TC Electronic bass combos, and on the 115-combo it was written on some paper: "try to lift me!", and so I did. And it was really light, specially for the size(250w 115 combo). According to the world wide web it is 15 kg, which isn't super lightweight, compared to the ZT Lunchbox, but for a 115-combo it is not bad. But I have no idea of how these amps sound like with guitars.

I have the micro+1x8 cab at home and I really dislike taking it places, even though I love the tones and it is pretty dang loud. I remember long ago skully had both it and a tiny and he recommended I get the micro bc it has more headroom. Tiny gets a sweeter medium gain classic rock vibe, but I super seldom want that. There is a dude on reverb that build micro terrors into combo amps with a 12" speaker. They look kind of silly, but the idea is really great. I'm trying to find someone to build one for me but make it look better.

Crate Powerblock? If you can see ahead of time if venues or places you'll be going have a cabinet you could use, just bring the powerblock. They seem to be pretty cheap. I've never played one but have heard good things about them.

How about a Fender 85 or what's the name of the amp that Johnny Greenwood used to use?
On the other hand if you don't need to hang with a loud drummer you could also consider the Fender Excelsior (Pro) or Vaporizer.
I also heard some positive words on those Ibanez TSA amps.

85/Deluxe 90/110/etc. They're generally not hugely cheap on the used market, and won't go to pseudo-jazz clean.

They sound good and take pedals well but more modern SS.

I've owned several over the years (they were good stopgap/backup amps)
