tiny but giggable clean amp suggestions?

Post by backwardsvoyager »

wondering if anyone's had a similar amp dilemma and/or has any thoughts.. :)*

i don't have an amp right now because i moved interstate and have some super shitty conditions that make or break what would work for me:

- small and light enough to carry on the bus/train with one hand. i don't own a car and i don't get enough brotein so lighter is better..
- loud enough to keep up with a drummer but not like super loud, just something that can do rehearsal volume in small ensembles and stay clean. i don't doom, i freejazz.
- at least usable at bedroom volume
- budget is up to 1000 AUD max but the lower the better. i don't care where it's made as long as it's reliable and sounds right.
- i live on the west coast of kangaroo land so store options are severely limited, will probably have to freight from the east coast. second hand market is horrendous.
- i really reaaallly don't like tube breakup for how i play, so particularly in that tiny amp range there doesn't seem to be much where i can get jazz type cleans at higher volumes. my favourite amps are all solid state but at the same time a lot of solid state amps that are small and cheap and attainable are digital modeling amps which i usually don't like. simple is nice... volume, bass, mid, treble.. other things are fine but superfluous usually.

what i've considered so far:

-roland - i really want a JC40 but i can't find it locally and with freight i'm looking at $900 if i order without getting to play it first.. literally perfect but it's a 2x10 combo and from what i've heard a little underpowered and not actually that small or light?
-one of those quilter micro heads. they seem awesome but pairing it with a cab that's small and cheap and loud enough seems like the problem..
-vox - ac4? these probably aren't loud enough and i doubt i'd like the sound but they're cheap and i've seen purple ones.. there's an ac10 now too isn't there?
-peavey - i'd make do with a bandit but they're pretty fuckin' heavy. at least the old one i used to have. super hard to find specific models around here.
-dv mark - the little jazz or jazz 12 are pretty ideal but very close to $1000 which seems like a lot and i've heard next to nothing about them. wouldn't be able to play before buying either.
-orange - something like a tiny terror combo might work? but even those are like $1100 here and they don't stay clean do they? never played one.
-some kind of active speaker that i can use with a Boss GT-001. the GT is pretty neat so i could probably make it work but i wouldn't know where to start with the speaker thing.
- a fender champ or something? maybe someone builds clones.
- blackstar HT5? are they loud?
..i dunno   i'm probably missing a fair bit of stuff.

thanks :)*

I don't know if it's in that price range but the Orange Crush 35 is clean as heck and keeps up with a drummer with the volume on 4, and there is plenty more beyond that for gigging. Light, good toans, and plenty of volume.

even the orange micro terror is awesome. sounds great, palm of your hand, totally cheap, enough power for a small show.

do you know if that was the crush 35RT or the crush 35LDX?
seems like i can get the 35RT for 335 AUD shipped :thumb: i think that's the newer one? checking it out now
vidret wrote:talking about the tiny terror, i have the TH30 which has the gain channel of the dark terror, so basically the gained up version of the tiny terror. i run it at 7w or 15w and it gets plenty of volume imo (and good cleans, with some character), but everything's relative.

not saying it's for sure the best option on your list, just giving some insight. youtube's got plenty of demos for it too.

you ARE looking specifically for a combo, right?
TH30 i would look at but $1499 here..

i mean i'm open to head/cab but for portability's sake i thought it wouldn't make much sense unless it was like that quilter head that's super tiny.
like the micro terror seems neat but would be kinda annoying to carry and its more expensive with the 1x8 cab than a crush 35.

i'd definitely be into that but it seems they don't sell them in australia

JC40 is defintely not underpowered, but it is pretty heavy.

Still, super solid clean amp and it takes pedals like a champ.

have you played the new one? it's only 20w per side so i was a bit unsure. the older 2x10 model is higher wattage IIRC.
i love JC's (miss my 120) and would totally go for that but yeah, i dunno. still on the large side.

i found a store with the DV mark stuff cheaper. i'd totally have to gamble on it without playing first but the Little Jazz is tempting. https://www.turramusic.com.au/Pages/Cat ... ?CIID=9538
45w and 7kg and super tiny.

I have the micro+1x8 cab at home and I really dislike taking it places, even though I love the tones and it is pretty dang loud. I remember long ago skully had both it and a tiny and he recommended I get the micro bc it has more headroom. Tiny gets a sweeter medium gain classic rock vibe, but I super seldom want that. There is a dude on reverb that build micro terrors into combo amps with a 12" speaker. They look kind of silly, but the idea is really great. I'm trying to find someone to build one for me but make it look better.

If you dig solid state, stay solid state.

What about one of those modern compact bass heads? They all look small and light enough to fit in a backpack or gigbag and can be paired with the cab of your choosing.

If you want easy to carry, Earcandy makes/made a 2x8 cab with a handle - so did Fender, the ultralight? Or maybe one of the Raezer's edge cabs? Those are marketed to the jazz cat set, so they are likely to be light weight, wide response, and designed for SS heads.
