I can argue that the Standard features in Ableton are what makes the program. I miss having Live in my computer. I have to get suite soon, or else my student discount won't apply.

Lite's only useful purpose is to let you kinda get a feel for it. It is chronically underpowered and under featured as an actual DAW.
Standard would DEFINITELY be worth it, if not Suite. I have Suite and it's amazing, included Max 4 Live functionality makes it indespensible for me.
But yeah, grab standard. Phenomenal. Lite caps at like 8 tracks doesn't it? It's nothing.

Speaking of Tim Hecker, he just had a new album that came out today and I guess he's playing a show in LA tonight with Alessandro Cortini. I've only listened to the new album once, not as dark as my favorite stuff but it'll take a few listens before I can fully wrap my head around it.

Yeah, I got the new album yesterday, listening to it now. I read an interview where he said he wanted to go in a different direction than his previous albums, less maximalism in a way. From what I've heard so far it sounds like something I'll have to listen to a few times to properly get into, i.e. rich but not as immediate as something like Ravedeath, 1972.

I qualify for educational discount at the moment which is partly why I feel that it might be sensible to upgrade! Is the Suite version generally considered to be worth the extra money?

If you have the money YES. You can also get away with buying the extra stuff a la carte, although that approach might not be that worth it since you have the EDU license.

I embrace limitations like that when working outside of a computer, but inside it (especially in a DAW) I wanna be able to do absolutely everything ya know?

And yeah @penelope tree mate I got the education discount too and it was awesome. Saved like $450 AUD I think. Awesome.

Also, If you do it, jump on www.maxforlive.com and download like everything that tickles ya pickle. A LOT of the FX and instruments are free and are generally only a few MB each maximum. Which rocks.

The big thing I found with lite was no midi interface support which was the only reason I considered installing it...and it was a pain to figure out that it couldn't do it (but I learned I didn't like the workflow...so I guess it was useful)

By the way, for those of you working on Windows, what software do you use for samples editing ? Preferably something not too expensive.
Audacity just has a terrible user interface, I used to be on OSX before...

I just use Audacity. Agreed that the user interface is pretty clunky, but it gets the job done. I'm interested to hear some other options too
