So how does a Switchless Wah work?

Post by Kellanium »

Does it just detect when you're at a certain point in the travel of the pedal (i.e. toe down) or does it do something else?

:idk:
id assume that it would have a standy position, that is to say, like all the way back it's off?
then as you move it some distance from that position it turns on?
It'd be weird though, couldn't do all the whoooo-wheeee0whhooooo-wheeeee stuff I like lol

Pretty much. I had a Bad Horsie wah and it was super simple. When the pedal was up it was off. And once you step on it and put some pressure it turns on. Has a spring in it to keep it up when not in use.

There's a small switch in the back, and the pedal always goes back because it's on a spring. When it gets all the way back, it hits the switch. So there is a switch, you just don't have to press it.

In the case of Dunlop, you have to adjust it so the change from bypass to effect isn't noticeable. It's pretty frustrating until you do.

Hmm...wouldn't that make the whole cocked-wah thing rather hard to do?

I like doing that.

Just put something under it so it can't go back quite all the way. ^_^

I used to use the end of a guitar strap to keep my MXR Variphase from going off to get really slow phases.

I always thought that since the Morleys were optical they could detect how far away the treadle was from the optical sensor, thus allowing it to have a preset distance that turns it on.
But that was just an assumption.

I always assumed the morley wahs were like this but with the whole Thing you step on, like a momentary switch. It seems simpler that way in my head.

I have a Musician Sound Design Earthquake Wah
The original version will come on in any position when you stepped on it or you could use the foot switch. It was a bit tricky to use at times though, your foot had to be in the exact right place to turn on and turned off when you took your foot off.
So I just use the other switch.
The newer version has a heel switch.
