Guitars without a lot of sustain

What do you do to make your guitar more percussive and plinky? Are there certain guitars with certian features you would choose for this sound? Do you even like that sound?

Wood bridges I think make guitars sound plinky. Light bodies, with little resonance help also.

have you played around with mutes?
i used to stick a sliver of rubber in front on the bridge on my telecaster so that the sustain would die out really quickly. it can be finicky but it's worth playing around with before thinking about more serious mods.
depending on the guitar you can produce more subtle effects by stuffing things behind the bridge or the nut, too.
you can also use like a stick of aluminium etc to give it that kinda 'clink'

fender offset tremolo can get there. A jag or Jazzy is a lot less sustained than an LP for instance. Jag with its mute can be damn fun.

Jaguar with strangle switch and traditional bridge, plus lighter (9/10s, go stainless if you can) strings will get you lots of plink on demand.

I do love that type of sound.

Unless you want to play without sustain all the time, a different instrument isn't what you're looking for.

I'd just EQ to remove the mids and low end and leave the highs. I'd go for a relatively clean sound too. No pedals with lots of gain.

as for a"normal" store bought guitar… Jackson Roads-es can be really plunky.. find a bass wood one with a floyd and put some really low output pickups in it… or be a rebel and build yourself a guitar body out of Azek http://www.azek.com/products/trim/trim or Kleer.. http://www.kleerlumber.com/products/tri ... ge-cutouts

Some guitars have a mute that lowers a foam pad onto the strings at the bridge. Vintage Jaguars had a device like this (that was usually taken off, lost), some Gretsches have a mute toggle system that allows selection of mute on the bass or treble side.

Yeah the combo of a vibrato system with a mute is kind what I'd like to shoot for, even if the mute isnt as contained as that type of system. Im also realizing thay my capo (shubb) cuts down sustain a fair bit on my acoustic, so hopefully it'll do the same when I get back into electric.

Want a cheap non-permanent mute?

Get a piece of plastic that's thinish and flexible (one of the plastic zip ties they give you for trash bags sometimes, etc).

Weave it in the strings to mute what you want. Can do it behind the bridge, like a bad capo, etc.

Abuse prepared guitar to wreck your sustain!
