Bass Weight

Post by Chuckchuck »

Basses I've owned, from lightest to heaviest:

Epiphone/Douglas viola bass--I don't know maybe 4lbs? Pretty damn light.
Squier Bronco: 5 or 6lbs after modifying; def under 6lbs stock
Gretsch G5123B 7lbs
Squier II Precision 7lbs
Fender Aerodyne Jazz 7lbs
Epi EB-0 7.5lbs
Squier CV 50's 7.5lbs
Squier VM Jazz 8lbs
Squier Aiken P 8lbs
Reverend Dub King 8lbs
Epiphone Jack Casady 8lbs
Fender Japan Jazz Fretless 8lbs
Squier Matt Freeman Precision 8.5 lbs
Fender Jazz Bass Special Fretless 9lbs
Fender Sting P around 9lbs
Squier VM 70's Jazz 9.5 lbs
SX Ursa-2 6-string 10lbs
Fender Reggie Hamilton 11lbs, 10.5 lbs
I only have 2 squiers now--I don't own all these.

Go.

I have no idea honestly. I've had a lot but I'm not sure of the weights. LOL

My Jack Casady weighs less than my thunderbird.
Weight has very little to do with how much I like them.

The problem with this is, 100 of the same bass can have different weights, but I think ppl understand this as ballpark numbers. It would be more effective if we had 10-25 of every model in existence, but infeasible.

Oh nice. I dig Japan Fender stuff. Probably due to the wood.
Look at dried weights per ft^3. Significant differences. THis chart was helpful for another project:

My concern w/ weight is how it feels on my back, not because I can tell the differences in sound between types of wood.

24 this year and my shoulders are both blown out. playing hard on a heavy bass is a bitch.

Viola basses aren't very punk rock but the dude from black lips plays one and it's punk rock to ignore what others are playing.
What if I build you a bronco bass with Musicman pickup in it? That's worthy trade bait I think.

dem viola basses are too neck heavy. that's part of the problem, most basses are extremely neck heavy.

They're tolerable--nothing a wide strap don't fix. Maybe neck heavy because the rest is so light.

it's is a solution…

I don't know what any of my basses weigh.. I have 20+ and I ave a beatle bass which is very light and what I play most is a flying V 5 string I built with a Carvin through neck blank which is really heavy.. but because of the way it balances and how easy it is to play I ignore the weight.. I do want to make another that is a lot lighter but I have to think about what I make it out of to get the most sustain because my sound reviles around flats and a lot of sustain :idk:
