Audio loop/playback/recording device?

Post by rembrandtvanrijn »

Just looking for a little handheld gizmo that I can use to play back audio loops/found sounds/field recordings etc. through my pedals. Also would like to be able to record my sounds directly onto it or with an external mic/field recorder (then which one?) and almost completely unnecessary would be for it to have the ability to mess/filter/glitch with the audio.

Any suggestions?

Boss/Roland SP series. Although your short-changing yourself by not mangling your samples!

That's what the pedals are for!

I imagine there could be something better out there than an iPhone for capturing the samples that can also play them? Something still portable and that I can use as a handheld live tool. How is the iPhone for seamlessly looping samples?

Also I hate loading stuff through iTunes too, wish you could just drag and drop through Windows...

I own an SP-303, and I love it. I would not use it for this application.

i would use separate devices for this. with something like the Akai MPX8 you just drag/drop samples onto an SD card, then load them into 'kits' to trigger loops with the pads (i think it lets you tune them too) and run into pedals. i've seen people use phones and ipods for this too, depending on what you use there might be apps for loading and mangling samples but recording onto phones is going to sound like shit.
for recording, a dedicated field recorder would be a good idea, something like the Tascam DR-40 (stereo 1/4in inputs, stereo x/y mics, very good quality). otherwise you're gonna have too many limitations.
