Talk me in or out of this....
Need some petty advice or people just making me feel stupid for asking.
I have a '68 Drip Edge Super Reverb. I love this amp...but as I'm no longer really a gigging guitarist and moving into an apartment, I'm afraid it's going to become overkill.
Roland recently released the JC40. What a sick amp, seems almost perfect for me, allows more utility routing option and portability etc
Do I do it... let go of Tubes and go SS and have some $$ left over for studio upgrades?
Ahh the sad parts of life.

Unless you're really desperate for funds, keep the Super Reverb if you think there's any chance you'll need it again anytime soon.

I'm definitely not hard up, the Super is my favorite amp ever, I'd say that answers it, but I've just had a restless feeling about it for the past 2-3 months. Sure JC40's will be obtainable at $350-400 in a few years to come though.
But as I think about impending maintenance the pendulum begins to swing back.

Good point, I have a bunch of vintage amps that all need work.
Well, hang onto it until you're sure you won't regret letting it go. This might just be a phase you're going through.

This. I went JC and never looked back. If you use a lot of pedals, these amps are perfect.backwardsvoyager wrote:SOLID STATE LYF

Are you sure that you'll never start gigging again?
I'd keep it and get a voltage attenuator. It's not just any tube amp that you're selling, that thing is going to be hard to replace.

Keep it until you forgot why you liked it. Saw Vidrets apartment rig, a TH30 with two cabs and a 100w (?) bugera with a 412 and that works perfectly for everyone involved. Maybe you'll have super cool travelling neighbors?

If it was a Twin reissue or something I'd say let it go but since Drip Edge Supers don't seem to come around every day (at least not that I see) I'd make damn sure before I let it go.

Re: Talk me in or out of this....
UglyCasanova brought up my other point, the Super hasn't been playing super well with pedals like Ravish Sitar, C9 (soon to be Mel9), CT5 and heavy effects in that realm. I lose myself in the mix a little more, which is what started me on this path in the first place.
Chances of gigs are possible, but i'm also thinking about keyboards, synths, drum machines that will also be needing amplification. In a perfect world I'd have both, but my desire to upgrade to some analogue Rack Compressors and EQ is preventing the 2 amp scenario.

Most venues mike up the amps, so you don't really need huge amps anymore. That's my (limited) experience, at least.

I agree with this, and even for solo house shows, the JC40 gets every bit as loud as the 120 according to Roland. Also Direct Stereo outs for running into the main system also helps on that side of things.

Word. We have a JC-77 and a JC-160 in our rehersal space. They can both peel paint off the walls. Neither me or Eivind bring them past 9 o'clock, and I think we play fairly loud. We have cranked them once. It hurt. A 40 would be more than enough unless you're playing a mansion filled with screaming chimpanzees.
