Instrument and Gear Insurance

Boring topic, I know.

I always treat my gear like they're my so fragile and delicate, but I'm always paranoid something out of my control is going to fuck me over. So, it's about time I actually insure the stuff.

Any of you pay for instrument insurance? And who do y'all use?

if you just play at home and don't make any $ off music, a general homeowner/renter policy will probably cover you. but you'll want to check that.

If you play out, you probably want a separate policy for that. it's not very expensive. heritage is pretty well regarded: http://www.musicins.com/

Me too. I'm good for up to around 9k usd.
I think Scandinavian insurance policies might differ in what they cover to other places.

Yeah, I didn't have to give them an itemized account, but gave them an estimate of the worth of my gear so they knew how much coverage I needed.

I have a separate rider on my homeowners insurance to cover. If I recall, it is $19 per month for approx. $15,000 in coverage. They did require specific serial numbers on every item, and will require receipts for every item in the event of loss (which will all have burned in the fire). Given that, its best to scan all receipts to an online location so they are ready to go when the worst happens.

When I called to ask, yes my homeowners policy did cover musical instruments but I believe it was capped at $800 or $900...so a Personal Articles Floater was required...and it stipulates I do not use my instruments for anything that makes me money.

Yes your homeowners or renters insurance probably covers it, but there are some advantages to having a personal articles policy on specific pieces of gear that you may want to protect. Firstly, there is no deductible. Your homeowners insurance probably has at least a $500 deductible. Secondly, when you file a homeowner claim, you lose your "no claim discount" although I am not sure how much that discount is. There may be other advantages. Talk to you insurance professional to see what best meets your needs.

Back in the day my N64 was stolen. Insurance replacement was an Xbox, which was also stolen. Insurance replacement was a paintball setup, which was stolen. Insurance replacement was a cheap guitar, combo amp, and a DS-1.
