This thread.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Never heard of anyone doing this, but not sure why everyone in the thread is so scared of trying it out. :snax:

Microwaving metal: very, very bad idea. Sparks, shorting out the microwave, taking out the electrical circuit, possible small EMP.

You're playing with a small radioactive emitter on a cassette.

You want shedding, nasty tapes that will do hell on your heads and transport?

Put an ad on CL asking to buy old casssettes (not pre-recorded). You'll get significant junkers, most of whom will be long shot.

This is what I thought the thread was going to be about, based on the title.
That someone has sticky tapes and was told to "bake them" to salvage/transfer. Not as a means for *altering* the tape for use.
People use food dehydrators for that...and in any event you've gotta make your transfer count.
Magnetic tape is remarkably robust but you've pretty much got 1 chance to salvage tape after baking.

Just use audio effects and different mfr tape formulas to tweak the medium. EQ, filters & pitch vibrato are friends :hobbes:

Oh man, people have done this in an attempt to reactivate the getter flash to eliminate gases in abused tubes. It has mixed to theoretical success rates at best.

Why use a microwave on a power tube? Just use a torch like homie from Rage Against the Machine did.

I'd assume you'd have a similar outcome using a torch on a cassette tape. ;)

Seems like it might be possible, but there are better ways to fuck up magnetic tape. Seriously, leave it out in the sun, bury it in dirt, whatever. Doesn't matter.

I used to work in a factory where we ran VHS tapes through a giant industrial microwave to erase them. It was at crotch height so I'll probably get dick cancer at some point.
