Adding Musicman pickup to Squier Bass (or any)
I like the tones of the MM Stingray. Is a large part of the sound from the pickup? If so, has anyone ever put a stingray active pickup in another bass? I was thinking of getting a squier bass for cheap and routing it for a MM pickup. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm 90% that tone comes from the pickup. Lots of other basses with those big ass HBs sound fairly similar. Would probably sound mean as fuck on a short scale.

Music Man has their own budget brand called the SUB and they run like $300 new. Would probably be cheaper/easier to go thay route

Oh yeah, duh. That's totally the way to go. There's also the Ray34 series which is like halfway between the SUBs and real Ernie Ball MMs.

I may need to play another SUB but I played one at GC and it felt like shit and the fret ends were a little sharp - like pointy.

Yeah the SUBs are a little too cheap I think, that's why I said go for the Ray34. Or put it on a Fender/Squier.

From what I seem to remember the MM sound is a combination of that pickup, its position between the bridge and neck, and their super hot preamp. Not sure of percentages of each component, so not sure how close just the pup will get you.

I'm trying this with similar aftermarket pickups, into a SX 6-string, as passive. I have all of the stuff now just have to execute it.Faldoe wrote:I like the tones of the MM Stingray.
