Rediscovering Pedals You Have

I have had a long relationship with the Boss RV-2. I got one from hbombgraphics 2 years ago. It wasn't an RV-3, which I thought I needed, but it killed the Digitech reverbs I was used to. It sounded so much fuller and more 'real.' I traded it back to him at a later date, after I got an RV-3. I sold the RV-3. Then he traded it back to me. Then I got an RV-3. Then I... decided to sell the RV-3. The RV-2 handles several of my favorite reverb types AND has a Gated mode the RV-3 lacks. It does miss the delay+reverb tone, but I don't really use it. For my current garage type guitar slaying, it is perfect. I just run a Melxowtone or Wolf Computer into it and set the decay really short. Perfection.

What pedals have you reassessed and decided to keep?

I bought a Boss BF-2 ages ago (10-12 years maybe) and never really used it. I was (and still am) more focused on synths and electronic things, and this was not a very good fit. Also, I used it with too much resonance.

I've been using my bass more recently and went through most of my effects. The BF-2 now has its spot at the beginning of the chain and is on most of the time. As a chorus with a bit of resonance, mostly.

Probably my barber ltd sr. So many times I've been contemplating selling it, but right before I've played it and realized it is probably the best OD I've played. And also it's not worth much, so anything those 60€ could buy would be way worse anyways probably

I fell in love with my DingoTone Fat Dingo Distortion when I tried it with my organ one day. To me it has always been a versatile and nice distortion with guitar, but it produces a gorgeous sound with organ! Nasty, thick and full and cutting through. Lovely!

When I decided to sell my BOSS HM-3 Hyper Metal, I gave it another try at a jam session and this thing ROCKS! Instant early-90's Jeff Beck sound and the best analog distortion (not fuzz or OD) pedal for low-tuned stuff that I've come across! Keeper!

And I have never felt much love towards my Marshall GV-2 Guv'nor Plus that I purchased 15 years ago. When I acquired an original English Guv'nor I was surprised how good it sounded with the tone knobs at 12:00h and I tried to achieve the same sound with the GV-2. The 4-band-EQ of the GV-2 is pretty bad in comparison to the original model, but since that day I have found a few settings that I can live with. (I made a comparison demo video of the two pedals and after 15 months it is one of the most popular videos in my YT channel.)

I had an entire "episode" over the Pigtronix PHI Echolution...in which I sold the thing in furious anger and disgust vowing to never lay eyes on it again...and then realized months later that I could never live without one again for my entire life. I tracked down one of the 100 limited edition chrome versions, (#74 here) and bought that bitch. It is one of the few on my board that I am confident would never ever leave it. It's now so ingrained into my playing style that I'd be naked and lost without it.

If something happens to it, I would have to go for a timeline or time factor and try to make presets that got me as close as possible to the echolutions sound and rhythmic delays.

i've sometimes watched demo videos for pedals i already have to amp myself up. like.. trying to get GAS for stuff I have. tricking myself..

I do this alot!!! It inspires me to be more happy with what I own, also it sometimes teaches me stuff that I didn't know.

What pedals have you reassessed and decided to keep?

It's funny, I go back and forth with the RV-3 and RV-2 myself. I originally got an RV-2 because several of my favorite players had one, but I had always felt that it was a bit too subtle for what I wanted. Later on, got an RV-3, mainly to do short, verge of oscillation delays, but I tried the plate and it was pretty much exactly the sound I had been looking for from the RV-2. But then I discovered how well the RV-2 works in front of dirt and it does feel more organic overall than the RV-3, so I realized I just had to keep them both.

In terms of rediscovering pedals, I tend to do that alot. I spent some time this weekend messing with the MS-70cdr. Hadn't played with it in a couple of months, but it's always fun for just getting immersed in insane amounts of delay and reverb and finding new combinations.

I have a modded HM-2 from Dunwich that I "rediscovered" recently. I actually never had much interest in the HM-2 or clones/mods before trying it. A friend of mine had an original and it never made a big impression on me. I did a bunch of demos with the Dunwich model for the tourbox though and ended up really liking it and finding it much more flexible than I expected. Unfortunately I don't really use distortion all that much and don't play much music that popularized or utilizes that tone much. I was considering selling it recently and decided to put it up against the custom Dunwich distortion I had made, to see if it was unique enough to need it as well (love the custom distortion, really great pushed high gain amp tones). Well, I ended up just playing around with it and my Strat and found it sounded really cool as a lo-fi distortion for some indie type tones. Not my usual playing style/genre either, but it sounded great and I crafted a song around it that I really liked.

Rediscovered my EHX Flanger Hoax. It's noisy, but it's satisfying my urge for phase/flange/chorus/complex modulation.
