What's your favourite feedback?

Post by jrfox92 »

I'm trying to figure out the best way to cop Greg Edwards' feedback sounds from Autolux.
It's like a mixture of instantly feedbacking delays and oscillating fuzz.
Are there any delays that instantly feedback? Even my DD-3 needs a few seconds to feedback when I hit it.

I'm looking for a sound like at 0:53

Also, any other general feedback/oscillation sources would be cool to know about.

Instant feedback: run a second delay with a mix control on an expression, keep it at that level, fade it in on demand.

I'm fond of the current Boss feedback pedal as well.

And using a little battery powered amp near the pickups on demand.

And ebow.

I don't spend a lot of time with this stuff, I promise.

Yeah, pickups near the amp is a good one. Helps if they're microphonic. :D

Also, EQ is your friend. You could use a parametric to tune your feedback à la Zappa.

Stereo delays and reverbs - especially ones with momentary feedback/havok/hold/oscillation switches - with the two channels run in series rather than parallel are GREAT for feedback

Fripp did the amp thing and used tape to mark where notes were distance wise.

Seppuku Memory Loss can do instant feedback. Yamaha AD-10 is pretty good at it too. LAL Octavella does a pretty neat feedback oscillation.

One of my favorite ways is to mic up an amp and run it as the carrier osc on a ring mod.

Para EQ is a blast too. Loop channels in a mixer for more fun.

Love feedback, manipulating feedback with peddels is a super fun thing to do.

Also, let's all appreciate the solo in methodrone for a second

This actually makes the most sense when it comes to how Greg Edwards probably does it since he has something like 3 or 4 expression pedals.

I really want to try this now, but I'm afraid I'll just cause things to explode.

That Yamaha looks really interesting, definitely gonna search for one of those.

I run my SMMH with the left and right in series and it's amazing. If you're into feedback you can't be afraid of explosions -- just don't wander too far from the kill switch.

My personal favourite: A loud amp, a dirt pedal, an es-335 (or similar semi-hollow), and a volume pedal to tune/tame the feedback.

Don't have the 335 anymore though, so these days I'm relying on the oscillation switch of my es-2 delay and the usual shit ton of distortion/fuzz.

I've found that I can get quite listenable feedback (meaning one with some hint of the melody / notes / sound that isn't jagged pain) in it by having a compressor going into a maxed our reverb pedal going into an oscillating fuzz going into another reverb (not quite as maxed out). I used a Pigtronix Philospher's Tone into a Biyang Tri Reverb on Hall mode into a Devi Ever Noise Floor on maximum with both switches towards each other finally into a Caline Snakebite Reverb. If you take a second output from the Tri Reverb into another channel you can fade between the two on your computer later which works well for me.

I'm probably gonna clone the full sized Fuck OD sometime soon.
Maybe that into my Holy Mountain cranked (that bitch is loud) into my Twin will yield interesting results.
