Recommend a Fuzz/octave for boosted solo's

Post by kidmag »

Recommendations appreciated. I have a single channel amp which I run a tad dirty, and use a boost or distortion pedals to get to my heavy dirt sound. I was hoping to find a good strong fuzz with some octave up sounds in it that works well being boosted by other pedals. Hoping to get some smoldering crazed octavized sounds on solos similiar a Billy Corgan typical pumplkins solo. cheers. :thumb: oh and don't have $300 or $400 for a pedal, so keep me in the well under $200 range. Tks!

Homebrew electronics makes an awesome octavia called the UFO that sounds fantastic, and I'm pretty sure its under $200. The octave-up can be turned on/off with a separate footswitch, too.

B-sharp Music in Providence RI makes a killer distortion/ring pedal called the Grim Rimmer that can get some seriously cutting tones especially when stacked with other pedals - http://www.b-sharpmusic.com/ You can also get some crazy results with chords - it likes fourths and fifths, and can give you a really cool "machine"-like tone... not quite sure how to describe it, but I dig. I'll see if I can find any clips... I think it runs in the $125 range, but I got mine a long time ago, so the details are a little hazy.

Yeah I couldn't find any demo's on the Grim Rimmer. The UFO looks cool, but actually probably too tame - also I couldn't find any demos with the thing being boosted - just clean guitar into the pedal. I guess a better discription might include octave ups and oscillations, and just nasty huge. Likely won't be doing cords, just single note runs/bends and double stops, etc.

What about the Never Drive from Devi Ever? anyone ever try that thing?

The Never Drive is a very cool pedal, but the octave up is very subtle. If you really want that octavia scream, you're probably better off with a GZ. Or a Destructo Noctavia, except that it really never STOPS oscillating

Ah - nasty huge and oscillating isn't really what the Rimmer does. More like awesomely robotic and cutting. If you need something to poke right through a mix, that's you ticked.

You might want to check out the stuff that Tom's offering in the Fuzzhugger section - he's got some crazy stuff including octave and oscillating, and is usually pretty willing to customize / combine circuits to a customer's needs.

I like the neverdrive for Billy-esque leads, sure it's more subtle than the DN, but what isn't
I don't know why there isn't more ND love, it has become one of my favorites next to the US.

"otavia scream"
The GZ has the least octave up of any devi pedal in my experience. :/ You have to be incredibly precise to always be able to pull an octave up outta it.

No, when being boosted (as this thread is about) the GZ sort of "overloads" and becomes way darker, and loses the octave.

Yeah sorry, I should've been more clear :/
It really depends how you're boosting it though, for a while it should just bypass the gate, but at a point it just completely explodes. Keeping it early in the chain should help with that though.

But he can put the GZ before or after a boost.

Personally I think if had a cranked Devi Ever GZ->Boost it would pretty much be Corgan lead tone. When you have the GZ set up so its going into an overdrive set up it sustains very well and can even feedback if you have the texture cranked.

As a pumpkins lover I highly recommend the GZ. The Never Drive is more for Mellon Collie style if you're more into that though.
