EHX Mole - Does it actually work?

Post by _r_ »

If it does I think it could be a very good £25 spend...

Basically I'm in a 3-piece post-rocky-metally-doomy band. There are quite a few passages in our music where our bassist is playing phrases very high up which leaves me to fill in the low-end space. Now, I play a Telecaster which I know isn't renowned for its low-end wallop but I love it to bits, it still means there's a big low-end gap in the sound though. I run through a McSpunckle And Aardvarks! and Algal Bloom for dirt, generally into whichever amp's going at the venue/rehearsal studio. So will this pedal actually give a big low-end boost like it says it will? And is it even meant for guitars or is it a bass pedal?

Big issue is that I don't have much money to spend on pedals, sadly. That's why this looks like it could be worth a try but I still don't want to end up with a £25 paperweight!

A cheap EQ pedal might be better and more useful.

I haven't really heard anybody say anything either way about the mole around here. They just kinda get it and forget about it.

The DIY option is good too...RMA was talking about selling boards for the tetanus booster and that adds a lot of nice low end. Really fills the guitar out.

A cheap octave pedal might be OK too.

They are darrrk. Nothing but low end. You may want some sort of blend...or an eq instead.

Nice dirt section, btw :thumb:

It seems like that's just a 400hz boost, so an EQ pedal will probably be more useful.

I third an EQ pedal. Boss Bass Equalizers (GEB-7) should be pretty damn cheap as well.

The Mooer Tender Octaver is supposed to be excellent value for money. It's quite a lot more expensive but the DOD Meatbox might be a good investment.

I had a Mooer Pure Octave at one point but the tracking and intonation were both always a bit off so it wasn't really good for anything other than church organ sounds! Definitely want to try out a Meatbox at some point but yeah, money...

I'm now thinking of picking up a cheap EQ pedal, seems to be a good suggestion. I've also been messing around with the third mode on my And Aardvarks! that only applies the dirt to higher frequencies and keeps the low ones clean, couldn't tell much difference but I might try it at the next rehearsal through a nice loud amp!

Sounds like you need a Bass VI.

My pedalboard costs approximately 191 Metal Zones.

The Tender Octaver is supposedly far superior to the Pure Octave although it still might not be appropriate for what you are trying to achieve.

I had the knockout EQ for a while and I thought it was awesome. An eq would probably work too but if the mole is the same as the bass side of the knockout then I'd say it'll do what you need

EDIT: buy used to make sure you don't en up with paperweight :thumb:
