Recommend me guitars with chunky necks

Post by kbit »

Looking at getting a new electric and a chunky neck is my #1 priority. Wants: "U shaped" profile (not too pointy or flat in the center, good to wrap my thumb at the top), around .8"+ thick at the first fret, 1.6875" or similar width at the nut, 24.75" - 25.5" scale.

Other things I'm into: solid body and semi-hollow are both cool. Not a big fan of Gibson body stylings (aside from the 335). I'd really like a guitar with some playable behind the bridge action (vibrato optional but also a plus). Neck pickup is a must. Preferably some balanced / "acousticy" sounding pickups (have been considering alumitones for replacements so maybe not the biggest concern). Master volume/tone controls, not a fan of separate controls for each pickup. Would like to keep it under $800, preferably closer to $500 or even cheaper, but you know, giving some wiggle room.

Any suggestions?
:hello:

& yeah, I know it might be better to go at this from a project standpoint and get an aftermarket neck, but figured I would ask before considering that route seriously.

A double cut Les Paul would be super up your alley if they had humbuckers.... An Epiphone Sheraton maybe? PRS SE? Not as thin as a shredder neck, not as thick as a Gibson.

I have 2015 Reverend, it's neck isn't super thin but I wouldn't describe it as chunky/big. The TVL JM I have has a neck that is much chunkier, it's described as a "C" profile on Fenders website. The profile on the Reverend feels about the same shape as the Fender (very round) but just smaller. Dunno if that helps!

(The Reverend is an excellent guitar for $750 btw. All the little perks- locking tuners, graphite nut, korina body, bass tone roll off really add up. The bass roll off is so much more useful than a normal tone knob imo)

I mean it's not a baseball bat. Depends on your frame of reference I guess. "C" just refers to the shape, not the depth. Any idea what the dimensions for your TVL JM are?

Only thing I've found for dimensions are 42mm nut (same as Reverend)

Old Harmony / Silvertone / Alden Stratotones have awesome thicker necks, but they're shorter scale.

A local luthier built a Tele with an absolutely massive neck. It was a ton of fun to play.

Buy a Tele, buy a neck. Win.

That's what Muddy Waters did. He seems to've done OK.

What does the bass roll off knob actually do? Whenever I see people talking about it, it seems like the knob version of a strangle switch on a jaguar (probably not the best way to describe it, but whatever), and when I watch videos it seems like it makes things twangier (ie, a normal tone control, but backwards, I guess).

Too bad your not into most of Gibson's aesthetics, I really like the 50's style neck.

The Rickenbacker 650D sports a very spartan neck, and probably the biggest I could play comfortably.

The bass contour just gives you more colors to work with. My Sensei has fairly hot humbuckers. The bass contour can get me a more P90 sound. or even a passable Tele bridge pickup sound. On the P90 Reverend, it goes from aggressive P90 to sweet P90 to vintage strat as you roll the bass contour down. It won't give you infinite options, but it gets you close enough for government work, especially in a live situation where you don't want to haul multiple guitars.
