I can't believe this...I need a phaser

Post by Jwar »

So guys. I feel like such a whore right now. I have always had some phase and I've found myself phaser-less. The only phaser I have is the sucky crap on the Eventide H9. Which is OK, but it's not what I want.

I want a lush, super lush, slow phaser. I love ones with the option of multiple stages or waves. ALWAYS wanted a Jet Phaser, but I'd almost prefer a clone.

I'd prefer analog over digital. I can tell with phasers more than anything. So that's why.

I'm in a toss up between several though.

Moogerfooger 12 stage
Subdecay Quantum DLX if I can even find one
Chase Bliss Wombtone 1 or 2
Solidgold FX Apollo
Or buy another Toneczar Halophase

I'm open to opinions though? I want something that's funky, holds lows well, can do strange shit, but do standard stuff as well.

This is a good one.

The Chase bliss Wombtone is pretty great too.

I can't remember the circuit used, but if dminner cares to comment, the one I got from him is lush as hell and can get real slow (and it was biphase too)

I have the Empress, mainly because the random mode on there is the best I've heard so far, but I don't like it for deep phasing so I don't think it will hold up on bass.
For bass I'd either go for a Faye Sing B or a Wombtone MKII.

I own (2) Moogs, a Wombtone, and the Subdecay. I’d recommend the Moog for slow stuff, but I’m primarily a synth user and slow-developing sweeps for 70s string synths is what I key in on. It’s great for what it does, but it’s not particularly quirky or strange in scope.

I’ve seen a couple Quantums recently around $250, but it’s not nearly as intuitive as other phasers. I would never part with mine, but I also couldn’t give you a ringing endorsement for bass guitar.

I’ve yet to find a good slow setting for the Wombtone. It’s insanely chewy and exotic, especially with the DIP switches, but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone as their only phaser. It’s not a utility pedal to me.

The SolidGold Apollo II might be your best option, as I think it should cover slow stuff, interesting rhythms, and a decent bit of the weirdness you’d find in a deluxe Quasar.

Another phaser that’s overlooked is the VFE Tractor Beam. It has range, but it’s also incredibly straightforward.

What version of Wombtone do you have, just curious...

Dunwich Nick just made an optical four stage.
If anyone wants to help me peer pressure him into making an optical and selectable 6/12 stage one, I will lead that charge.

I'd rather have 2/4/6 stage or even just 2/4 is that wrong ethically

Man, you're always stalking me. If it's not here, it's Instagram, or YouTube, what's that about? :hello:

It's not that the Wombtone can't do slow, but in terms of its own unique properties, I feel it's stronger and more dynamic in other areas. In terms of coloration and texture, I feel that's a poor way to apply it. When I say that I don't see it as a utility pedal, what I mean is that I see the Wombtone like a Bugatti. It's a high-performance, sophisticated, and exotic piece of engineering. ---BUT you don't buy a Bugatti to take your kids to school, or to dash by the grocery store for milk and bread. A pedal like the Empress Phaser is like a sports utility vehicle. You can basically do any routine task with it. You can go on a date, grab the kids after soccer practice, go to the office, go by the factory...BUT you don't buy a rugged SUV to drive around Monaco.

To me using the Wombtone for routine slow sweeps is like buying a luxury sports car, when you live in a lazy town where all the roads are 30 MPH straightaways. Why would I buy a $200K automobile to drive 30 mph on a road without curves? To me the Wombtone is something you want to show off, not something you want to bury in the mix by rolling back the pots to 11:00 and setting the rate to minimum. So perhaps it's unfair to say it's not a utility pedal, as technically speaking it can be driven at slower speeds----however once someone's been exposed to all of the bubbly hiccups and trem-phase rhythms inside, that other phasers can't touch, you're losing so much of its essence by hiding all of that extra color and movement, in order to get a more straightforward down-tempo sweep. Thankfully my garage has about 20 phasers inside, so I don't have to choose one over another.

Yes.

Moar stages is best stages.

Nah, 2 and 4 are probably better for slow sweeps, but you do get those extra little warbles on 6+ which is nice.
6 stage phasers don't shine until you get into higher speeds, but it's so worth it when you get there.

Well I have a Wombtone MK 1 coming now thanks to my man Joel! :) BUT! I need more later! I love phasers. They make me so happy. SOOOOOOOOOO happy. :) I like big swooshes.

I'm going to check out the Empress for sure. I had one Empress pedal and it was amazing.

The Infinite Phase was amazing. Sigh. Regret. LOL
