Meathead + Vox ???

Post by frigid midget »

Rethinking my board again, trying out different dirt pedals. I'll probably end up with 4 fresh pedals or so, the goal is to keep the one that works best for me and flip the rest.

I don't like the way most fuzz peds sound through my AC15C2. At least not compared to the average loud/clean none- EL84 tube amp. Might be the greenbacks too I guess, dunno.

Anyway, I just realised that a meathead is one of the few generic types of dirt pedals I never tried pairing with a vox combo. I say "generic types", cause there's a couple options out there for a no frills type of medium gain crunchy dirt box that's supposed to emulate a cranked tube amp, and they don't all cost as much as a meathead :)

Also: Anyone who's tried a pedal like that through a vox, and used a jazzmaster/strat/tele, or a similar guitar with low output pickups: Lemme know if it's worth a try.

My amp is an Aus made EF86 AC30 copy, so Voxy for sure. I;ve tried both MH and Sonic titan clones through it with awesome results. I don't really like using big, thick fuzz live though, so I never actually owned either.
This was with a strat with Lace Sensor Red/Blue/Gold in it (I think)
My favourite dirt sounds with my amp have come from literally all 4 current SS/BS dirts and a SHO. They have all sounded excellent through my rig and my Mini has been a constant source of awesome, even at higher gain sounds.

I think the Meathead is pretty boring, it doesn't even sound fuzzy and it doesn't really rock, it's not punchy enough.
As for the D*A*M stuff, the best one I heard so far is still the EFE 6618, which is a Muff, but their Muff and Fuzz Face pedals are so close soundwise that I wouldn't really be able to tell them apart.
If you want a good Fuzz Face that actually can do both fuzzy and tighter sounds, I'd say just get a Maypole from Snuffkino in the B/S/T.

Fuck the haters, I can build you a Meathead for parts+shipping. I have most of the parts on hand too.

But no, I haven't tried that.

My Arc fx Meathead Dark clone is amazing with my barncaster and Blackheart Handsome Devil, which is very AC15 / Marshall 18 watt voiced. And doom as hell with downtuned humbucker gits.
