Shitty radio+Mr. Microphone would net something godawful, but I don't think it'd quite get there as well.

Could be neat though.

rfurtkamp wrote:This sounds all like production versus something you get with a pedal - I'd go for a shitty old built-in boom box cassette recorder for this sort of sound pretty quick, in close proximity to whatever amp I was recording to a point where it was going well into the red for both the mic and the tape.
either this or use the default voice memo app on your phone. they usually use a small bitrate. a small, cheap solid state amp would help too.

In the world of film sound, re-recording available audio is called worldizing. You work with the original sound, but you're recording a second time to manipulate the environmental properties.

Example: The audio on-set was bad, so you have to overdub the dialogue. ---BUT the scene took place in a castle or a large room. You want to recreate the presence of a large hall without relying on computer magic. You don't have a castle, so you e-mail the audio files to a friend in Italy with a big studio or access to a palatial estate. Upon receiving the audio tracks, your friendly pal Giuseppe plays the audio through speakers in a room like the one you're trying to simulate, and the audio is re-recorded to add natural ambiance or reverb.

American Graffiti is a good example of the practice of worldizing. You can hear radios fade in and out, where they switch from the original sound to re-recorded audio in order to simulate space.
