EHx Civil War vs EHX Tall Font

Post by TraceItalian »

So I'm thinking of getting another Sovtek Muff in the (very distant) future to replace a bubble font I used to have, and I'm kinda stuck between the two. I hear folks going back and forth on whether they sound the same or not, and the closest I could find was GearManDude comparing a Bubble Font to a Civil War. So I was just wondering which to go for, because I love the sounds of the Civil War, but my frugality loves the Tall Font.

Wren and Cuff has a pretty handy chart comparing them:

I have an early run tall font and a wren and cuff civil war. W&C civil war has more low output and is overall smoother sounding and balanced. When i think of the tall font i think raw and aggressive, and it's lows are already pretty awesome compared to say, my rams head. I've got a handful of vintage big muff and a handful of W&C clones and the clones are always more polite sounding and off in subtle but obvious ways. Never played an actual civil war but based on the w&c id say the civil war is a little more laid back with extended lows and highs compared to the tall font but they are rather similar. My tall font actually has the civil war circuit board so I'm not sure how it compares to later runs. If I wanted even ballsier lows I'd probably go with my W&C White Elk Sustainer, that's a vintage big muff that's on my GAS list. But its a variation on the tri-muff so not really what you have in mind I guess, but worth checking out if you've never heard of it.

Here a side by side I made of the tall font and w&c civil war
