Using pedals to create womb noise

Post by Interstellar Burst »

Ok so, I'm honestly not trying to be creepy here!

We're a month away from the birth of our first child and my wife's busy searching for apps to recreate womb noise. Apparently this helps babies chillax, which I'm led to believe is often a big challenge.

It occurred to me (a) that it might be fun to do this using guitar pedals and (b) that the ILF community contains a wealth of expertise in ambient sound-scaping.

So any tips or ideas for technique/equipment etc.?

At my disposal I currently have a couple of P90 guitars plus the following: route 66 comp & OD, Bit Commander, Nano POG, Mobius, Scarab Deluxe, Super Unpleasant Surprise, Super-ego, Supa-puss, Particle, Polara, Infinity looper and an expression pedal.

I also have a Count to 5 inbound.

Put a contact mic on her belly, record it.

Experiment with tapping on strings to recreate a heartbeat pulse; make some atonal drone around it and low pass the bejesus out of it.

Check out Lady Godivas Operation by Velvet Underground especially the 2nd half. While obviously they are trying to recreate the sounds of an operating room, a lot of sounds are similar to the sounds in a womb from what I recall.

Create some white noise/hiss by maxing all your dirt pedals > Polara 100% wet(try different reverb types) > POG 2 octaves down + low pass filter > make a loop on infinity looper. Loop 1.

Then:
Guitar > od/comp > POG(same settings as before) > reverb(mix around 40%, some decay) > mute strings with left hand and tap the bass strings with right thumb over one of the pickups(try both). Tap something similar to a heartbeat.
Make this loop 2 on infinity.

When I was in the womb, I remember it sounding a lot like a bit commander going into a scarab deluxe.

Seriously though, just record air and add some loooooong reverb.

Some low frequency drones through an Afterneath would probably do it

Unless your wife's womb is hella cavernous, there shouldn't really be any reverb as the uterus isn't really reflective? Maybe a resonant bandpass filter to emulate the body's resonant cavity and then the lowpass filter to achieve the effect of the amniotic fluid muffling sound.

Put a contact mic at the bottom of a pot of macaroni and stir it a bunch

Our youngest really liked when ben played ambient drone shit. He'd loop it and let it run for her whole nap. It was nothing like womb sounds, but it chilled her out.

It also helped *him* chill out during nap prep, which was sometimes tough, because he didn't make milk.

This reassures me that I can fail to achieve womb authenticity and still succeed :thumb:
