Favorite speakers in an Orange 4x12?

Post by count.me.out »

So I just came up on this early 70's Orange 4x12. Bought the cab unloaded and I'm contemplating a few different speaker choices. Greenbacks are an obvious consideration. But any of y'all have experience with the Weber DT series? Seems appealing because early breakup and my living situation is not conducive to playing loud as fuck. Those Tonecvlts look dope too but I wonder how much of the appeal is potential for hype and aesthetic bc heavy/doom/kvlt trendz. But reputable sources tell me Weber speakers tend to be legit pretty across the board. Is my curiosity about them just related to aesthetic and subcultural dickriding. No clue because no sound clips and Weber sound demos are pretty weak anyhow. Whatever.

Anyway, this forum is my go to if I'm really interested in something or feel suspicious about something because you guys are like wizards.
Shout outs to y'all for breaking spells and saving me from buying dumb shit in the past.

TL;DR - I came up on a sick fucking cab, but don't really know shit about buying speakers.
Any advice, very appreesh. Plz halp.

Check out Weber Thames ceramics. They are Fane Crescendo clones and should make your cab sound like it was supposed to.

V30's are the standard for modern Orange cabs, and Weber makes great speakers. What kinda music do you play and head(s) will you be using through it?

if you're leaning towards this flavor, check out these. Half the price of V30's and USA made, if that matters to you.

I haven't played those exact speakers, but WGS makes great stuff. I have a pair of G10C's in my Vibrolux Reverb and love them.

I'd say two G12M 25s and two G12H30s. That's modern equivalent of *the* stack back in the 60s. One 4x12 with 75Hz 25 watters and one 4x12 with 55Hz 30 watters. Also cant go wrong with four V30sw but that would be stupid loud/sensitive. I run two G12M 25s and two G12T-75s in my 4x12 but it's a vintage Marshall spec cab by Mojotone.

Not all based on actual experience, but my vote vore any closed back cab, regardless of the amp:

G12H30
Veteran 30
WGS ET65

Or if money isn't an issue: Fane 50watt speakers like the ones that came in my old Hiwatt cab. Don't remember what they're called or anything, but they had a purple label and somehow managed to push tons of low end without compromising in terms of note definition, clarity, mids/trebble,...I'm a tool for selling that damn cab

I'm a big fan of Eminence mainly because they are extremely efficient, which makes everything louder. But I've also liked WGS, and they are very well priced. My favorite that I've ever had in that type of cab (Orange, Emperor) are four Eminence Legend GB1216's. They don't make that model anymore, but they make an 8 ohm version. I'm not sure if it sounds the same or not though. The next best set up I had was a mix of V30's and 65's in an X pattern. Smooth like butter with tons of low mids. Loved it. Right now I'm rocking two Governors and two EVM12L's and it sounds pretty killer, and plenty fucking loud.

I'm late getting back to this, but thanks so much for all the responses guys, y'all have given me some good options to consider. Money's tight right now so it's all coming together pretty slowly, but once I'm able to get some speakers in the cab I'll probably post a demo. Apparently this cab used to belong to Wino and it went on tour with the Obsessed, so maybe you'll be able to hear the shrieking ghost of departed weinrich braincells.
