My favourite octave downs are these, hands down:
Boss OC-2 = the nicest and synthiest octave down I played so far
Copilot FX Mantis = almost as heavy as the Pollyanna and it has the exp controls for pwm sweeps
EBS Octabass = sounds more like a bass guitar but still slays when combined with fuzz or drive
MI Audio Pollyanna = the heaviest and nastiest octave down fuzz I know of
Subdecay Octasynth = more subby if you set it right, sounds awesome
Lead synth sounds:
Copilot FX Orbit = a bit like the Moog Freqbox, one of the meanest synthy pedals I know
Freakshow FX HiRay = this thing is nasty, like a synthesized saxophone strangled by a high pass filter, with a volume pedal it does sweeps too
Fuzzhugger Velcrobot = in between the previous two, sounds great, remarkably stable
Korg Miku = combined with fuzz this makes a really cool and expressive synthy voice as well
Mellowtone Wolf Computer = still one of the classics, from glitchy 8 bit style to a solid lead synth voice and more
Rainger FX Air Space Invader = weird thing, does envelope filter sweeps, goes from slick to noisy synth sounds all in one box

Re: Octave-down and fuzz?
Many octavers can be picky with fuzz, and the other way around, especially if You want a clean and massive lower register. Octave after fuzz can sound unnatural to some - though I like it - but it can sound way heavier. Fuzz boxes after octave can suffer from the octave pedals buffered signal, and loose a lot of their character, and also cut the lowest low end of the octave effect. One solution would be to split the signal to two channels and use a milder overdrive after the octave pedal. But that sounds boring, doesn't it?
For more traditional sound one could of course use an eight string or twelve string bass for that crazy low register without octaver. THen again, when You've gone that far, on the brink of fuzzy insanity You'll probably want to try octave down effects with that, too! And from awesome to absolutely demented level of sub-harmonical ooomph try stacking different boosts/ODs/distortions with fuzz in front and after the octaver.
Many fuzz maniac ILF builders have crazy glicthy fuzzes that can do octave down effect. Fuzzhugger and Dwarfcraft for example. Since they're ILFtastic (=rad) they can be a bit much for some (=blues Lawyers, traditionalists, and wimps). The good thing is that the fuzz and octaver doesn't have to interact nicely since the same box produces the effect. The down side - to some - can be that the effect isn't necessarily always pitch accurate as the clean signall but hey - it's crazy fuzzy! Awesome!
Instead of pitch accurate clean meh-meh-meh.
I play Bass VI style geets as my main instrument, sometimes four and twelve string bass guitars myself, and I still want to get more of that crazy low register sub-sonic brown note synth fuzz sound. and use myself Devi Ever TBD and modded Bit Mangler, Dwarfcraft TGD and Secret Destroyer, and Fuzzhugger AB-Synth for stable octave down synth fuzz bass sound. Typically You'll be using starve function and back the vol knob from your geet to get that effect.

^ The truth. Starving oscillaiting fuzzes and backing of the volume is the one true path to suboctave goodness.
That being said, I do love the Second Voice I got for ILFmas. But that might be more of a PLL-thing than a straight up octaver?

Tristan, have you tried the Octron? It's my fav so far... it stack so well.Tristan wrote:My favourite octave downs are these, hands down:

Re: Octave-down and fuzz?
I prefer to be able to add octave to anything, SO I prefer a separate octave pedal
right now I'm using the shitty Modtone Deep Dive, which is like a chinese copy of Octave Multiplexer. It's not SHITTY, but it's a bit odd about the EQ sections and stuff... Anyway that into my Mountainking Huge Box is MASSIVE and it beefs up my Elements similarly nicely.
I'm really GASing for an OC-2. Never had that, the Modtone is my first octave pedal, but it's pretty inspiring and I'd really like to get the real deal when it comes to tried and true octave pedals
plus it does sound to me it might have some attitude I'm missing from the Modtone a bit

Re: Octave-down and fuzz?
Syl, I never tried the Octron, one of the few I never got my hands on.
Honza, the OC-2 is great but be sure to try it before as well as after fuzz, sometimes the buffer gets in the way as Bassus already explained.
There's nothing heavier than the Pollyanna or Mantis though.

Re: Octave-down and fuzz?
The big plus on the Octron is the octave UP which can be set a bit ring modish.
The octave down is yummy into a drive or a fuzz... but might glitch a bit if you dont set the mix correctly.
I think I'll get another Octasynth... someday.

Had it, sold it.earthquaker devices organizer: digital… I almost really like it…
Did not care for the "Leslie-like warble."
Did do P&W swells better than anything.
I prefer my "P&W" played by Josh Scogin. So.
