How to turn effect into momentary on/off and....

Post by Uncle Grandfather »

Hey, not really sure whats available and never really looked into this before so hoping you kind and experienced people can help me out.

So i got this deFormer granular synth and it doesn't have a bypass(i think?), and when its turned off no signal gets through, but most importantly there is no stomp to engage the unit. Its a tabletop unit and I'm going to be using it as such, but especially for playing live i'm going to need some sort of an f/x loop and stomp to engage the deFormer on/off the signal. I've also got another granular synth, the dark interpreter that is giving me the same issues. I played a couple gigs with the dark interpreter where I put it in the f/x loop of my Mountainking Rollback and that worked fine to engage the unit on/off the signal....but that also let me know that I'm going to NEED to be able to momentarily stomp the effect on/off TOO. There are going to be a LOT of presets with the deFormer that I'll want to momentary stomp on/off for smoother response or whatever. I'll be using different setups in different projects and I think this is going to be the best solution for live shows, and for the studio too really....right? I guess I'll need two boxes, or one big box with two f/x loops and an engage and momentary stomp for each f/x loop...maybe two boxes would be easier for signal routing now that I think about it.

tl;dr
i think I need a utility box with an f/x loop and a stomp to engage the f/x loop, along with a momentary stomp for the f/x loop. That's gotta exist, right?

I found this but I'm not 100% certain its what i'm looking for, but it seems like its got a stomp to engage the f/x loop and a stomp to momentary on/off the f/x loop...pls halp

You may want to look into a midi stomp box. Now that you are using digital effects, you can achieve so much including bypassing using it.

Also, I think that box will do what you're looking for, but the description isn't exactly clear.

 I thought it was just me when I couldn't decipher the description for that pedal haha. Yeah I've always worked with cv/gate, even have that cv expansion box on the way for the deFormer...but you're right I should really/finally look into using midi to get even more out of this unit. Didn't even consider it for this application. Plus the microgranny and strymon and and and haha. Thanks for the idea :thumb:

Even if you don't go crazy with the midi, I think the deFormer an store like 512 presets. You can set up your midi stomp to just call them at will, as latching or momentary, and just use it like your normal board.

A programmable MIDI controller can do lots of fun stuff with the DeFormer. I'd look for one that can send PC, CC, Midi notes, and if you can swing it, MIDI clock start/stop. This will put almost every possible control of the deFormer at your feet if you take the time to program it. One cool thing I've done is set the Freeze function in some of the time effects to be turned on/off with a momentary foot switch. or triggered samples with a foot switch. Or control the filter cutoff/other stuff with an expression pedal. My midi controller can't start/stop the sequencer unfortunately, some day I'll look for something that can.

I did a quick google search for Uncle Grandfather Musician. And I came up with this.

I think we can all rest easy now that we know that UG is the lead singer of Pink Lemonade.

You can also get a bypass box built with a 1/4" jack - plug in a momentary *or* a regular switch to engage/disengage, go to town.

I have both momentary and standard switches on such an arrangement for a few of my rack toys.

Yeah now that you've suggested it and with Dark Barn confirming with some really great ideas too, I think it might be the best intro to actually using midi with the deFormer. Taking care of some utility functions like this is perfect...and I didn't even get to thinking about changing presets quickly on the fly with some stomps :thumb:

Thanks fellas :joy: Still going to need a non midi solution for the dark interpreter though.

That's a pretty great idea if im understanding correctly, this way I could have the bypass box on the table and just run ONE cable to the "stomp box" and put it on the floor if I want. That would ba a LOT tidier/easier than running in/out and send/return cables to that box I found if I wanted to have the stomps on the floor, which in most instances I will want to do. Thanks :excellent: also are you saying there are stomps that act as momentary and latching? That would be great..just press down so hard for momentary use and then all the way down to get it to latch. Does that exist?

If you want some trogotronic mojo: http://www.trogotronic.com/wp/product/c1_claymore_ab/ (but one could be built cheaper).

http://xotic.us/effects/x-blender might work well (and then you can fade in and out if you get someone to make the blend sweepable with an exp pedal)...I'm sure some one could make them.

I also know how to make a cv switch which would could wire up to be activated by a 5v signal (like an LFO), a momentary switch, or a latching switch.

Or, use a mixer with the solo/mute buttons if you are going table top.

Cool I'll check those out :thumb: I do use a mixer in a lot of setups...but need to have the stomps in this particular scenario.

Nope, you need two different switches. It's just you can pick which one is plugged into said jack at any time.

If you want a "does both" switch, you'll have to go MIDI - you can set simple on-off or a 'push on, on release trigger off' behavior, etc.

ahhh...i thought that was strange that i'd never seen a dual purpose stomp before haha. thanks for the clarity, i think you've lead me to what I'm looking for although it would be GREAT if the "stomp box" could be wired with one latching and one momentary stomp :(
thanks again :thumb:

The trogotronic is...just the way they are wired is that if the latching is on, the momentry will by bypass and the reverse will be true if the latching is bypassed. The one you posted at the beginning will work for that too. (I think the trogotronic and loopmaster are pretty much the same thing).
