Looking for music similar to...

Post by PeteeBee »

lets have a thread for discovering music similar to artists you already dig. So often I find myself super into a band that only has like 4 recorded songs. This is a major bummer when you've played them all about 15 times in a single day, and don't really know anything all that similar.

To start us off I have two bands which I would absolutely love to have some similar tunes to.
1) culture abuse

2) la witch

Both of them I know stuff remotely similar, but not really. Not similar in the right way that it scratches the itch, or adds to it so I'm not blatantly ripping off their songs. Any suggestions?

Updated with some vids.

Just listen to a video of theirs on YouTube.

The YouTube algorithm has gotten much better at providing valid associated videos (VAVs).

I guess I can try the YouTube suggestions more. I typically feel disappointed by the auto playlists or whatever the algorithm feeds me.

My comment was more directed towards D.o.S. than you, PeteeBee, but I think the YouTube algorithm gets better the more you use it. It learns from you or something. I predict you'll be less disappointed with it over time. I generally don't like that kinda stuff either, but the YouTube one has surprised me in leading me towards good selections.

If we're talking best practices I think including youtube vids makes sense, particularly because it allows us to focus on specific eras (if applicable) and also getting into the ears of someone else is always better.

(also it keeps me from going down the 'culture abuse' youtube wormhole)

Oh yeah. I'll definitely include you tubes in the future. It's just so much easier.

And maybe that's why my YouTube suggestions suck, it has learned that I like watching pedal demos and kexp performances. Like I don't really give it that much information to go off of, so it can't predict very well.

Can't really post links with being on tablet, so I'll just list off a few?

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

It has this weird futuristic, yet nostalgic feeling that I can't really explain. I haven't heard anything else with that kind of sound + vibe.

Nick Cave - Henry's Dream

I've always thought of it as being what heavy music would sound like in the post apocalyptic world where electric instruments really aren't an option. Something with that kinda thing going on?

Om

Just the general sound of the music. There's this one song on The Stooges' first album that kinda has it, but that's the only thing I can think of.

Neubauten - "Dead Friends"

Can't really describe what I mean with this one

Goran Bregovic

Just a general thing. I dunno, I find a lot of Slavic/eastern European music to be really nice, and I'd love to find out about others that I don't know about.

Rowland S Howard - "Sleep Alone"

I know there's really nothing else like him, the dude was just a force of nature, but still... I obviously know about Birthday Party, and quite a few Grinderman songs are similar (at least with how the use of noise and chaos was done), especially on the first album, but I'd like others.
