That and the Deluxe Bass Big Muff are the only two muffs I own and have any experience with, and I have no real need for more. I'll probably get more, but I think the DBM is a good start. The bass boost function is great, I always have it on. Remember that the mids section can be used to cut mids even more, which is how I use it. I get some nice (for me) sounds out of cranking back the mids and putting the bottom knob at around 9 o'clock.
That's like recommending a handjob over sex because it is all you are familiar with.

Nothing, it's just that there are (literally) hundreds of alternatives that come in at roughly the same cost, since it's one of the most used circuits ever, and a lot of them sound better than the original label.

Hahaha, oh ILF. That makes far to much sense and what would I ever do without this forum

I think these are all BM based, they get love from like a lot of plaves and I've played some of them in store, and they are available: Blackout Musket, Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh, Earthquaker Devices Hoof, Way Huge Swollen Pickle, Death By Audio Fuzz War.

Check them out and listen to the demos, used they should go for about a $100. I still think Algal Bloom is a good bet for string clarity and all that you asked for, but if you want to look at other options check them out.

Don't hate them, EHX puts out and has put out some really cool stuff, nobody can deny that. But in terms of fuzz/OD/distortion there is better options by smaller businesses. So basically what DoS said

I think the biggest complaint has to do with quality control, but I don't know exactly because I don't hate EHX.

It needs to be said that the Algal Bloom is a unique circuit and is not based on any other fuzz. It is definitely not a Muff, but can get Muffy if you wish. Same with its Fuzz Face and Rat characteristics. It is neither of those, but can do them if you dial it in properly.

Where the Algal Bloom really shines is note/string clarity. So if you want something that can be super-heavy in the power chord department, but don't want it to fall into a toneless mess when you switch to some open chords or arpeggios, go Algal Bloom.

Out of favor, but I definitely recommend the Devi Ever Hyperion for copping Muff sounds on the cheap. Dwarfcraft makes a good one, I've heard. The Earthbound Audio Supercollider and especially the 71 Supercollider is badass and has a lot of tuneability.

Sorry for my late reply, I've had many issues with my band. Now I think I've solved many of these.
Yes, actually, the quality of many EHX pedals is crap, shitty and noisy footswitches that break easely etc... I've had many muff (NYC ehx) and many clones (like Hoof and Musket), I didn't like any of them.
I'll look to an algal bloom or a doom bloom, but for what I've listen it sounds too bright, and actually I'm using a JC 120.
Another pedal that I'd like to try is the Dod Boneshaker, it seems to have a huge amount of gain and the parametric Eq will be the ice on the cake, I like to have a 3 band eq on my dirt pedals, instead of a tone knob.
Or I'll go into a good rat clone or something that sound like a Shredmaster or HM2. But, like I saw in my firs post, I'm on the bugdet and US boutique stuff actually is too expensive in Europe.

I just want to leave this here - I¨m doing 25% off a couple DE:FX trying to purge the stock, including the Hyperion (for the budgetz) and BDSM - which is not a muff, BUT it can bring that kind of thick fuzz wall :idk:
