Re: Are guitar set-ups scams?
I learned how to adjust the truss rod in the neck and set up bridges from the internet. It has taken some time, but only like an hour to learn and maybe a night of letting the neck cope with the changes. My CIJ jaguar though has the truss rod adjustment in the heel, so it is the worst.

Re: Are guitar set-ups scams?
my local guy charges 45 with strings usually and to me it is very worth it
I have setup my own guitars for years and guitars for my friends and what I have found is that I like having someone do it for me.
it's not needed that often and it makes my life a ton easier
plus I tend to get fussy when I set up my own guitars and do repairs and someone else who is doing it for a living just gets the job done as efficiently as possible
The way I see it I could waste time doing it myself and never be happy with it or pay someone to do it
save all that time and I usually like the work just as well if not better than my own
not sure that makes sense

I miss being able to pay to have people change strings for me.
I *hate* changing strings.
Setups, can do in my sleep. I will, however, NEVER do a setup on a Fender XII ever again. Ever.
But I hate changing strings.

THIS. Hahahaha. My least favorite part of doing a setup is the restring.rfurtkamp wrote:I miss being able to pay to have people change strings for me.

Glad I'm not alone. I'm teaching my gf how to change the strings on her own guitar, with high hopes that she'll love it and then do all of my string changes in the future.

I have exactly no knowledge of how to set up my bass beyond changing strings. It seems a little like tube rolling to me: I get it, but I don't care enough to put the effort in.

Just got My guitar back from the shop and it is playing so smoothly.
Plus little things like a loose volume pot that I hadn't bothered to do are all fixed
if you find a good shop and good service a setup is totally worth it
plus they completely love my nelson and were showing it off to other customers

Re: Are guitar set-ups scams?
Nope, still hate it. Hate vintage tuners (yet most of my guitars have them) most of all.
It's not the winding that's the hassle, it's the whole process. I hates it forever, I do, damn bagginses.

Re: Are guitar set-ups scams?
When I got my XII Jag project together I thought it would just take basically 2x the time to set up because 2x the strings..duh! I can get a 6 string guitar decently set up in about 20-30 minutes.
It took me like 4-5 hours to get a very very mediocre set up with the 12 string. I had to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod. Tension is huge and very finicky with 2x the strings compared to 6. So you have to string it up, check, unstring, remove neck, adjust, put neck back, restring, recheck, etc... Then the saddles intonate individually, and vintage tuning machines are a pain in the dick. It winds up taking way more time than you'd thunk. I have a screwed up ground in it now and I'm dreading taking it apart again.

Re: Are guitar set-ups scams?
Yep. And that is why I will never touch a XII again.
