Can't Believe I missed it ...
The amount of music coming out is staggering and has been so for a long time. What bands have you heard recently, that are already "old", made you say, "I can't believe I missed these guys?" Or, what are some bands you really liked for a while and think other folks would like too?
Can't Believe I Missed These Guys
Sneaker Pimps - I started listening to them about 2 years ago and was shocked that they had some hits in the 90s which must have went over my head. Six undergrounds is a great trip-hop song:

You May Have Missed
Helmet - No kidding. I saw them fairly recently and when I told friends they were going to be around nobody knew who they were! In case you haven't heard of them, they were the early wave of the NY Hardcore Scene (but not Punk) that emerged as Grunge was fading. It took HEAVY and ran with it, but left the METAL on the side; it seems as if Helmet was the progenitor of NU METAL (along with Rage Against the Machine) but doesn't fit in that Genre. Here is what put them on the map:

Prong - Again, no kidding. People never heard of them. Also from NY during the same time as Helmet ... similar story/genre. Here's what put them on the map as far as I can remember (from Cleansing, A GREAT ALBUM):

Grip, In.c - Dave Lombardo's band after Slayer - super super awesome, not well known. A good example:

Jelena Jensen - I don't think she ever got really big but this was a great song:

Hahah, Sneaker Pimps, Helmet, Prong.
I'm kinda feeling like a teenager again
.
I still listen to Sneaker Pimps sometimes...
And while Prong is kinda obscure, Helmet are definitely well-known.
Also, it took me ages to seriously listen to The Cure. Which was a stupid mistake because they obviously rule.

The deeper you get into The Cure's catalog the better The Cure becomes.oscillateur wrote:Hahah, Sneaker Pimps, Helmet, Prong.

Love 'em. Planning on seeing Prong this year, in fact - they're coming out my way in May.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I missed 'em in 2015 (came close) but will try to see them in 2016. The NY scene in the late 80s/early/mid 90s for hard rock/metal must have been great but it didn't get the coverage Seattle got for Grunge.jrmy wrote:Love 'em. It was great seeing them recently. I saw them in a relatively small venue and they played the entire Betty album along with other hits. He played his signature hair metal purple ESP guitar with a missing neck pickupjwar wrote:I fucking love Helmet. UGH. Seriously one of my favorites of all time.
I picked up a tour t-shirt. Their sound was awesome and not explored deeply enough.

Sounds sorta like DefTones ... here is a 1971 song that was part of my Pentagram playlist:ProCarsteNation wrote:Mudfuzz wrote:oscillateur wrote:Hahah, Sneaker Pimps, Helmet, Prong.

This song is formulaic for heavy metal songs in the late 70s/early 80s. Power - Somber Interlude - Power ... Think Breadfan, Victim of Changes, Phantom Lord, etc. ...

I got to see Helmet open for the Melvins in '97. Winner!
Helmet lost me after Aftertaste. But those first four albums are mainstays for me.
