Educate my brain on the Fairfield Barbershop

Who's using one and why? What did it replace, or what did it not replace? What do you like and dislike? I really like Rat-style distortion, but am open to new ideas on overdrive/distortion pedals. I'm using a Jazzmaster and Gretsch Baritone into a Blue Jr. Ideally I'm after something that responds really well to playing dynamics. Does this fit the bill?

I think it sounds really nice for that nice clean/dirty middle ground on guitar. I remember it being pretty responsive to pick dynamics, too. I thought the sag control made the drive sound "softer" in a really nice way. Not sure I would know how to compare it with a Rat though, definitely no where near as much gain... I didn't get to use one that had the tone switch, but I found the ss/bs Mini to cover very similar ground tonal ground and was capable of more with the two band EQ. Also I found the bias control on the Mini to be more aggressive/cruddy than the sag control on the Barbershop, which is to my liking but YMMV.

Also everyone and their mother is a ss/bs fanboy round these parts so take this with a grain of salt

Yea it's really low gain. Not RAT like in anyway. I had the Mk1 and sold it to buy the new one with the cuts but never actually got round to it. Killer overdrive that can get kinda fuzzy with the gain maxed and sag squeezed.

I've been thinking of getting the always on version, I pick soft enough that it won't affect my clean parts, but it would really add a nice oomph to dynamics.

It sounds exactly like the original with a bit more range of gain and an added hi-cut switch.

I love the Barbershop. In my case I use it for just a little hair when I dig in. It really excels at this use, very tone neutral. It's the first pedal in my chain and almost always on.

I want one. If I end up using my Fuck more as a fuzz, I'll probably snag the always-on barbershop.
