Lousy Bridge humbuck + middle single coil sound

I haven't played a guitar with an H-S-S configuration in a long time. Is the bridge humbucker + middle s.c. setting supposed to sound so crappy? I wired the pickups and single volume/single tone knobs myself. I've read of something called auto split coiling in the 2nd position, but I just wired it so that the full humbucker and middle single coil would activate at the same time. Any advice?
