Loud, reliable, rock/metal worthy combo amps?

I have had a few loud randalls that were pretty cool in one for or another
but they and I think to some extent the peaveys can have some hiss or buzz at times


a 90dollar backup is pretty sweet

Look around for a Mesa Tremoverb 2x12. It's essentially a early 2 ch Dual Rectifier with reverb and tremolo in a 2x12. But I warn you, they are fuckin' heavy. ~107 lbs. I've seen them listed as low as $700 before.

Mine has been my main amp since '96. I loved it so much I was worried if I swapped it out for a head it wouldn't sound the same, so I ordered a custom flipped headshell from Mesa and did this instead. As a bonus I've never seen another like it.



Now I've just gotta convert the original combo cab into a matching 2x12, get some tan jute grill for the cabs, and I'll be rollin' a pimpin' 3/4 stack.

Actually. There's been some Mendela Effect shit. V-4s are no longer stupid clean and too loud to use. All of a sudden they're distortion machines.

I think I'd like something that has a bit of gain on its own but is also compatible with dirt pedals, as I really love using fuzz into a dirty amp when applicable. I'm scared of Mesa, but willing to try it out. The VT seems like the best bang for the buck to me right now.

I'd be using it a weird QOTSA meets Burzum context (at least that's what I'm going for). Also, the VT gets the added bonus of probably sounding super dope with my bass VI which is what I mostly play in my main band these days.

I use my V-4 for everything from clean bass, overdriven to fuzzed out bass, cleanish guitar, crunchy rock guitar, and full on belty midrange dark hardcore.

The VT does not have a bunch of gain on it's own. Also, a shit load of thrash bands used Mesa Mk's, 50 Cal's, and DC's back on the day, Recto's too.

My buddy Ed had the original 5150 2x12. It used to piss him off when we played and my Tremoverb made him disappear in the mix. He constantly tried to get that fiddy to sound as thick and ballsy as my Tremoverb and failed. Even when he added the matching 5150 4x12 and I added my EVM12L loaded 2x12, same results. He got crushed in the mix.

BUT, I'm gonna say gain levels aside, the VT is a monster amp. If you want to get near those QOTSA tones I highly recommend just going that route, and slapping one of these in front of it.

Goddamn somebody jumpon that VT-22. That's a steal! I love mine but, yeah, it doesn't quite fit what you described unless you plan on using pedals for dirt and they are so goddamn heavy. Seriously the heaviest amp I've ever lifted.

It's belty with the mid range boosted at any of the three frequencies really.

Heard lots of praise for the peavey classic series too. I saw and loved a classic 50 that was in a weird 3x12 combo. I had literally no money, so I ha no reason to be out testing amps, but I still want it on the regular.

I've had a 2x12" combo I wasn't crazy about, but had the 4x10" combo and matching 115e cab to sit below it. That was a great rig, and within your price range. They pop up on Craigslist, too.

Same settings I use on my V2, keep the ultra hi switch to the right as well. Punishing the front end of mine with a Soldano Supercharger and a Bee Baa. Although slightly different, my KT88 modded V2 has no problems hanging with a V4. Love the versatility of V series Ampegs, use mine for basically any stringed instrument.
