Vocal PA for dumb loud bands, advice?

Post by Forrrest »

recently I started jamming with a guy that also want to sing
the PA at our jam space just doesn't keep up with the volume of our amps. orange stack, hiwatt stack, ampeg stacks, cranked.

any advice on what kind of PA we should be looking for that would compete without a sweat?
what do you guys use?

Another Hiwatt stack. Or, more seriously, a PA rated at 500W or more.

I have little to add other than having a pair of 400w active mackies, and they aren't loud enough. So get more than that.

Set up opposite of the PA. Make sure you're running the EQ flat and the gain at unity on the channels you're using and on the master. If you can, get that shit elevated. I had no problem hearing a 300 watt Yamaha Stagepas "over" all my amps and drummer as long as they were suspended or on stands. EQ was set flat and the gain controls were set at unity.

currently have a powered mixer with 500 watts going into a pair of 15" tops, raised on stands.
setup opposite it or the mic would feedback like a pissing mofo.

so MOAR power & moar better speakers...

JBL PRX635? I love shopping for gear, but this seems like the most boring purchase I'll ever make.

If the PA speakers are setup like monitors facing towards you they'll be facing the back of the mic that's what I mean by setup opposite of the PA. Prevents feedback and doesn't get lost in the wall of sound that's he drums and amps.

What Walt said.
PA shit is boring, but if your mate is so keen on vocalising, you should outsource the task to him.

Can I ask if he's a loud singer/screamer/yelling guy?
I don't want to sound like a prick (or a vocalist) but good technique can actually get you a lot of the way there.
I'm not expecting it will overcome your wall of boner there, but someone that knows how to belt will have a better time keeping up.
