Loud, reliable, rock/metal worthy combo amps?

Post by WeHuntKings »

So I sold my guitar amp like an asshole and I really want to get into some projects where I'm playing guitar. I need a solid, preferably tube combo amp that can keep up with at least one other guitar, bass and drums. Trying to get into some abrasive heavy thrashy/blackened type stuff. I'd rather stay away from the twin reverb and the jazz chorus, even though those are good/popular choices. Something that has a fair amount of gain to it would be nice.

First gen Peavey 5150 2x12

I always thought they sounded great and they were pretty reliable [at least the one my friend used...he would also run a 4x12 at bigger shows].

He played abrasive thrash hardcore metal kind of stuff.

Old peavey is the best! 5150 gets real mean. What's your budget like?

Ideally, nothing over 600.

Heard lots of praise for the peavey classic series too. I saw and loved a classic 50 that was in a weird 3x12 combo. I had literally no money, so I ha no reason to be out testing amps, but I still want it on the regular.

Peavey 5150 or 6505 combo for sure, 5150 2x12 would be the best deal.

Jet City has some good gain, Soldano designed.

Old peavey will fit the bill. Also the newer bugera stuff is pretty cheap and has survived the abuse of my band mate who has a track record of killing gear.

I think the Peavey 6505+ 1x12 combo is Made in China. If that matters to you that rules the Jet City out. But I think the 6505 has a different voicing than the head... somehow the combo isn't quite the same. Or so I thought I read.

5150 2x12 combo is definitely within your budget, potentially with room to spare if you can find one locally. There's one local to me for $600. I think the going rate is like $500, $550.

They do make the 6505 in a 2x12 and that one is MIA. It seems somewhat rare though.

The 6505 2x12 is no longer listed on Peavey's page: http://peavey.com/products/6505/ don't think it is made anymore.

I have the 6505+ 112 combo. Yes it is made in China, though that isn't as bad as it used to be. Price point is nice though, I got mine for $375 used. The main circuit differences are the loop not being tube buffered, and the built in spring reverb isn't great, oh and only 2 6L6s (~60W) of course.

Around here 5150 2x12 combos are almost as much as the 100W heads (5150 or 6505).

ETA:
Peavey VTM, Ultra, JSX, XXX, 3120, Butcher could work for you too, if you found them in your price range. Quick glance at the Atlanta craigslist doesn't look great for 5150/6505 listings.

The guitarist in my favorite now defunct local punk/metal band exclusively used two Peavey XXX heads. I was always blown away by his sound. They are cheap, loud, and rad.

Kustom Coupe 72 all tube amp 2 x 12 reverb, trem/vibrato super clean - $499
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/msd/5350573807.html

These are pretty bad ass. Lots of features for the price.

Totally forgot about the Diavolo. I know that Ancient Astronaut played one for awhile. So there's another possibility.
