Modulation quest

Post by gnomethrone »

I'm not really feeling my current phaser and I can't decide what to try next. I want something that gets slow and spacey while retaining some dry signal. Here's what I've had:
*Boss ph 3 - cool sounds just wish it had a blend control for a little more dry.
*Boss bf2 - I use to get real obnoxious with this in an old band but I'm more into phase, vibe and chorus these days.
*Original mxr phase 45 - loved this but it's buffer strangled my signal when it was off. Would try some kinda modern knockoff with moar knobz.
*Fulltone mdv 3 - I thought I was robin trower for a minute there but it didn't get slow enough for me.
*Danelectro chicken salad - nah man
*Behringer ultra phase shifter - good controls but there was some kinda harshness I didn't like. Also, felt like it would crumble every time I stomped.
*Keeley Phaser - I think I like fewer stages? Also it made me look like a dork. I dunno.
*Boss ce-2 - smelled like teen spirit
*Rainger fx compactotron - weird foot controllers were too much for me

What I'm looking at:
Obne reflector
Alexander f-13 flanger
Old morley volume phaser
?

These days I play a blacktop jazzmaster tuned to dropped b into a peavey butcher set pretty dirty. Don't need any more grit, just some wobble.

Also what two modulation pedals do you guys like to stack?

Try an old Morley Pro Volume Phaser [chrome ac one]. Thing got me back into phasers and it sounds great...can control sweep speed or sweep itself with the treadle. [And it is a volume pedal too]

Maybe an old mutron phaser would be good too and sometime they pop up for a good price [and they use a different kind of phase circuit...a less common way to do it I think].

Korg Nu-vibe might be worth looking at as you can tailor the sweep and it has foot control.

Amdek, old mxr, and the old chrome morely flanger can give you a slightly different sound on that end..,they use ccds instead of bbds.

Uglyface has some nice modulation with the lfo mod.

I like to stack the arcaderator [some mod] or ugly face with the Morley phaser. Also my amdek flanger into slight mod delay. Or slow carrier ring mod into flange into a nice analog delay.

Another option is to check out some thing like the misty cave...

There is also pwm...which could be cool...or modulate fuzzes with an lfo like the Copilot broadcast...

Also, the two slowest phasers around that we found are the moog moogerfooger and the infanem compact Faye sing b. The infanem is pretty light and does some fun stuff plus it has waveshapers for peak and valleys of the sweep...it was OK and I liked it...but traded it in a moment of panic. It just had a lighter sound to me

Haven't used a moog though. The moog can get real slow though...plus has CV options.

Umm...gyroscope by Copilot if you want to go filter route or ever the polivoks filter in that regard.

Spacey, though, I go for the amdek flange and delay.

Studio mod max phaser might be a good light phaser with some unique options if you can find one.

I've been GASSIN' for an EQD Grand Orbiter v2 for like forever. :idk:

Two phasers sound great stacked. As do phaser & tremolo. Almost anything sounds great into flanger or delay.

Do you DIY? http://m.ebay.com/itm/Lovetone-Doppelga ... nav=SEARCH
Check the documentation for the super slow mod using the control jacks. If I can build these . . .

goddammit you guys are the best

galvar: that morley looks awesome. i used to have a morley wah that i would do really slow sweeps with and this looks even better. does it retain low end ok?

listening to lots of demos and these weirdo modern pedals might be more suited to what i'm doing than just a traditional phase. this is for a band situation im writing stuff for and i kinda suck at tap dancing pedals while trying to play live. one pedal that gets weird is probably a better plan than stacking a couple. ugh that goddamn misty cave is so good. i almost grabbed one for cheap on black friday, kicking myself now. eqd sea machine looks real fun too and alexander f13 is totally bonkers.

thanks for all the good suggestions!

Yea, the morley had better low end than the infanem. It actually slightly boosted the signal if I remember. There is like a dead spot/jump in the sweep of the treadle partially because of the morely optical thing (instead of gearing...bulb plus LDR). They make a flange version too that goes for double but it sounds good (though I prefer the phaser...). The LFO had a pretty good range when on auto...but you could manually do it as slow as you want. The nice thing is that it is easy to go from auto to manual to volume...It also has nice controls to tailor the center offset, depth and volume/mix (I think that was the third...my friend has had mine for weeks...need to get that back).

It just had a nice sound to it.

There are these units too (seen them go from 300-400 but require upkeep):

Korg Mr. Multi is something to look for too...more subtle than the Morley, but also more compact and has other effects too.

Do you still have that Compactotron, gnomethrone? What did you think of it (just curious about your thoughts on it...I was kinda mixed on it)?

SnazzyFX makes some neat modulation if he ever gets back to making pedals again.

Going to through the EHX Flanger Hoax up there for something kinda weird even though I have never used one.

Cheers man, good luck on your mod search!

oh man i was thinking about it after i re-read that list of pedals i've had and i left off a few. i ended up trading the compactotron. it was unique and fun to mess with but i didn't get along with the little igor controller thingy. i have big feet and just couldn't make it work haha.

Yea, it kind of wasn't my thing either. The controllers were a little weird and it got kinda noisy sometimes...but haha, good deal that you traded up! It'll find its home one day...(still have the only video of it on youtube! (No matter how bad the video is haha). It is a neat little funky effect though. Fun to try.
