New rat pedal question

Post by Stinkbug »

So I usually get gift cards from my parents, and I really want to use it to get a rat pedal. I've been looking at the Cat Tail and the Don't Shred On Me. I have Abominable's Hail Satan, and absolutely love it, so in leaning towards the DSOM. Plus, it will be on sale the day after Christmas. Am I making the right choice? Should I think more about the Cat Tail? What other rat options should I look at?

I love rats and have been eyeing the Dunn O))) and the Don't Shred on Me just because I like trying out different rats. I'll super endorse the Rat Tail, though, because I love the option for having two gain levels on one pedal. I usually have mine set for a low gain on one footswitch and higher gain on another - run it into a Smallsound/Bigsound OD and my gain needs are pretty well taken care of. I wish there were more Rats with 2 gain options. I think Dunn is doing one, but I can't tell if the two gain levels stack into each other or it's a one-or-the-other situation.

I enjoy my rat tail. Got it in a trade and the other footswitch turns on oscillating feedback. I have it set as a nice overdrive and kick on the feedback for a more fuzzy feel. Can't go wrong with any of these options though I don't think.

Got my cat tail 2 weeks back and absolutely love it. I've never been a massive fan of the "ordinary" RAT but got intrigued when I heard the fuzzrocious. So far I've only used it on bass and baritone in a band setting (on a "regular" guitar at home) and it's sounded killer. A lot of sounds in it. Would deffo recommend it if you want something rat-like but with more options.

Has anybody tried a Big Ear Woodcutter? Based on YouTube demos it sounds great, but my experience with it ends there.

I know these two have different features, but what would you say is the difference in tone between these two?

The base tone is almost identical (imo). It's the features that change the sound. The rat king has different clipping diodes but I really like the no didode option. I would say the rat king has a larger range on the filter knob, as in it can get brighter.

The led mode on the dsomd also sounds great, and it has a clean blend which is great for bass and baritones. The doom and death knobs on the dsomd is also really useful, you can get quite a bit of low end or highs.

The rat king is very small in size, whereas the dsomd is kind of ridiculously big.

I did a bit of a shoot-out with a friend yesterday, (using my nate mendel p-bass tuned CGDG) putting his old-school rat up against a bb-preamp and my cat tail, to name a few. What we got round to was basically that the Rat held up well against its newer pedal friends, but lost A LOT of the bottom end at certain positions of the filter. The cat tail, besides having a million other sounds with all it options, could pretty easily be dialed in to sound practically identical to the Rat, but without the low end loss. The BB-preamp could get similiar sounds but seemed a lot more transparent and with better clarity overall. They all sound great though, but imo the cat tail is the more flexible one. I'm currently using both that and the BB-preamp on my bass board.

(FYI the whole list of pedals were: Xotic BB-preamp, Fuzzrocious Cat Tail, Proco Rat, Dwarfcraft Baby Thundaa, Dwarfcraft Surrender Dorothy, Zvex Wolly Mammoth, Moody Sounds Hjärt Müller (modded) )
