Ok so hitting the momentary switch at all resets the loop in mode 2. That's actually cool that you sorta get both behaviors between the 2 looping modes. And they fit nicely, because mode 3 is where I'd want to layer anyway. And mode 2 is where I'd want to quickly introduce new material to be chopped up.
just in case anyone else has questions about this reverb auction which states :"This is the absolute newest version, which has yet to ship from the pedal builder. So new, nobody has it yet."
It is simply not true, so don't worry you have not missed any emails etc regarding the current production. The auction does correctly claims it is a rev j board, which is from the run earlier this year. We have not shipped any of the current run. period. It is likely an honest mistake by the reseller due to the "clarity" of our website, but i already had a few questions regarding this auction so i just wanted to post here too.
EDIT:
The description has been updated to say what's really happening here, the seller is just already reselling a pedal even he doesn't have yet. haha. the picture is of a rev j though.

yes you can record while the pedal is still playing back a sample in mode 2, but once you release the record footswitch the new sample will take over completely, not layer. you could though with the new firmware record layers in mode 3 then flip to mode 2 to slice it up, but again recording in mode 2 will overwrite, not layer.
it's really not that complicated once you have a unit to play with, but maybe a bit confusing to think about without one
The expanded ct5 looper is a great idea I would buy instantly. Have a longer record time and more ways to mangle the loops, a fx loop would be super sweet as well. I love how the ct5 mangles loops in mode 2, just a little more record time would be nice.

The problem being?
The loop timer in Mode 2 is 4 seconds right? How long of a loop timer do you people want for your sounds? 4 seconds is honestly more than enough for me for most things I do.
Well, I mean. It'd be cool to have a longer loop playing in tandem with the chopped up version. Or, following the anti nautilus route, have fit play a window of the entire loop which you can move.

Yes it basically two 4 second buffers that get written to at alternate footswitch holds, that's why you get 4 seconds for a sample in mode 2 but 8 seconds in mode 3, where you are just layering onto one buffer that occupies the entire memory space. Not to give too much away but the next thing we will drop has more like 2 mins of loop time and is a fairly complicated granular, although not a rip on the anti nautalis or anything like that. i know i have talked about it before and keep saying it will come out blablabla but this year went a little crazy with the ct5 so i just continued to do runs of those, and now here we are the year has passed, nothing new released, this has been a somewhat sobering realization, so we will be making a better effort to actually finish projects promptly next year. there should be 2 larger time based effects released in 2016, one asap/late january and the other near the fall/winter. we are finishing up manufacturing the current ct5 run for now, which should wrap up in January, then releasing the new guy (tentatively called "856 for ZELLERSASN") and producing both models during the first bit of 2016.
still think scott's devices handle the weird more musically than other offerings being produced out there
looking to get in on some updated designs of your other shizzz too
but in other news,
CT5 and a harp.
