I have an earthbound audio iron pig and like it quite a bit. I've also had a keeley modded rat (which included stock sounds). I like the iron pig quite a bit. It has a lot of clipping options and the hi/low gain switch gives you a lot of flexibility in combination. The single tone control is the only con I can think of. Mids or bass controls would be nice. I guess they're pretty sparse on the used market, but worth checking out if the price is right. It's definitely got a lot of range, but you have to do most of your tone shaping via selection of the clipping mode. I dig it.

The VFE Alpha Dog is one of the very best of Rat variants. Extremely versatile, well built, and backed by a great customer service. My highest recommendation.

I am kind of a hoarder of Rats. I have an
86 Rat i scored for 25 bucks
90's Vintage Reissue big box
96 Rat 2
Byoc Rat clone
and Dunn o))) Deceiver

The Don't Shred On Me never sounded like a Rat to me. Just my opinion.
Get the Deceiver distortion. Matt Dunn did his homework.

Heard good things about the Don't Shred on Me too. And everyone should have some evil Abominable pedals on their board.
Listen to Oarfish, it's heavy.

Really? I mean, I don't have any experience with vintage rats so I don't really know, but the don't shred on me has some similar "ratty?" characteristics as my fuzzrocious rat king. I really want to try the deceiver though. I was torn between the deceiver and don't shred on me deluxe, and ended up with the latter for the clean blend and the ability to control low-end frequencies.

I'm going to follow your path and start collecting Rats :omg:

Yes, I agree. I also picked up the Thorne Tourcher and it also rips!

Really liked the Blakemore ROUS I used to have. The separated bass and treble controls were my favorite part. Best tone shaping of any Rat variation I tried. Just wish it had a bit more output.

I love the way the Turbo Rat sounds.
I owned one for forever, stupidly sold it, and then recently bought another one.
They have a pretty crazy high output, which is a huge plus for me.

They're usually pretty cheap too!
Both of mine had LM308s (not that I think that really matters), both cost me less than $75.

I have a rat 2, and while it is good for guitar, it has a low end cut that sucks for bass. I put it before a Russian muff to negate the low end loss.
