The Squarewave Parade : TeaspoonSLIGHT : Announced!

Post by kosta »

Any TSP fans here will be stoked to hear that a new Teaspoon has just been announced! Seems to be a simplified version of the TeaspoonCAS with an added blend control.

All of Steven's work is stellar. Looks like another sweet one!

these things look awesome. tsp stuff always sells out pretty quick. hopefully there will be a couple more runs. the price seems pretty reasonable.

Reasonable price, if you knew about it and bought it when they were still available... :grumpy:

oh dude, i've been wanting one of these for while, just to crack it open and get into steven's circuit head... we exchanged emails a few months ago and he gave me the heads up on this, but alas i am too late for the party once more.....

he did mentioned the possibility of releasing the schematics for the previous version of the teaspoon at some point... one can hope....

The pic above is of the next batch in production. Looks like there'll be some more chances to nab these.

I just looked - there is a nice comforting BUY button. I didn't try it, but it might work.

What is so great about these things, they don't seem to be of much use unless you just play them and twiddle. But are they any good with guitar? I don't mean to sacrilege here, but I really don't understand.

No sacrilege at all. A totally fair question. These are definitely meant to be hands on devices. With the other one, the TeaspoonCAS, you could set it up so that your input signal level would trigger the sample window to open. With that setup you could operate it relatively hands-free. This one doesn't have that option, but it does have an aux input for CV or audio level signal which will trigger the sample window. So you could, for instance, play your guitar through a Moog Phaser or something and have the LFO output CV into the Teaspoon's aux input to create kind of weird oscillating samples. With the added wet/dry blend control on the TeaspoonSLIGHT I imagine you could just engage the window hold switch (leaving it open while you play) and get some nice glitchy delay type stuff. These are definitely cool, but definitely for the tweakers.

Here's a short demo clip I did with the TeaspoonCAS a while back that shows the guitar level triggering the sample window. In this clip it works like a delay basically, and then erupts into self-oscillation.

Aha, I feel enlightened.

Damn you though. This morning I've seen it up on the site and I had myself so convinced I didn't need that thing. Now that I know how I can hook it up with my Moog Ring Modulator, I might want it nonetheless. :grumpy:

Here's a good example of the CV window triggering implementation:

One big difference between the TeaspoonCAS and the TeaspoonSLIGHT though, is that the SLIGHT does not have the additional CV input to modulate the sample size / pitch. So the crazy pitch mod stuff you here in this video wouldn't be able to be controlled with CV on the SLIGHT. You can still do it by hand, just not with CV.
