Swapping TimeLine for DMM. Do I really want to do it?

Post by ThurberMingus »

Title says it all. I have a lead on a DMM for swaps and I'm really on the fence about it. First off - I really like my TimeLine, it's an awesome super versatile pedal that I use all the time. The downside is that I find myself fumbling over some of the presets when playing with my band. I use maybe 5 banks, but when jamming I find I stick to pretty pedestrian sounds.

Enter DMM. I've always thought they looked and sounded amazing. The mojo is undeniable. I've been thinking I could bring 2 pedals to impromptu jams and a Fuck and DMM just seems to make perfect sense.

I'm so on the fence, as the TimeLine can do a close enough approximation of the DMM, but I know that YouTube videos can never capture the full VIBE of a real analog delay.

I also have a PitchFactor, which I can dial in for some of my more complicated digital delay sounds, which makes everything even more complicated.

If I didn't jive with the DMM it'd be pretty easy to part with it and aquire a TimeLine again right?

Help me fuzzbreaux, you're my only hope.

I'm no help, I've got a glorious, Analogman-modded big box DMM, and I still jones for a Timeline.

And if you can't be with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

I would do it but that's because I didn't enjoy my Timeline. You on the other hand do and seem to utilize a lot of it with your band. It seems you like the versatility and should probably keep it......

.... Now PAIRING a DMM with a Timeline is the real and only true answer. :yay:

I don't have the money or the board space for that

Oh yeah, I also use a DL4 for looping, but I suppose I could lean over and turn on the delay every once in a while. I also have a couple of other delays kicking around that could hang on the board too. It's just hard. I love the TimeLine but I mainly try to cop analod delay sounds with it and the occasional tape or reverse for special effect, but it doesn't do much heavy lifting given its feature set. That mojo though.

Big box. I wouldn't even consider an XO!

Ha, then you must indulge your romantic impulses, friend.

The DMM big box is the William Blake of delays. The Timeline is more Alexander Pope.

Same components, same circuit, cheaper :hobbes: unless you go 80s/90s DMM, but this will need a re-calibration (not cheap unless you DIY) and also keep in mind that every DMM will sound different because of this calibration thing. So if you can play it before buying and you like what you are hearing, go for it.

Also, remember you are paying top prices for Panasonics MN3005s, you could be fooled and get any other BBD ICs that basically do the same for a fraction of the price (thinking in resale value), especially these days that EHX has re-launched the DMM series with different ICs.

If you are playing with other dudes/instruments and you really love that DMM sound, then go for a DMM. My main issue with the TL is that it gets easily lost in the mix when you want those percussive repeats at high feedback levels.

When I had the Timeline and the DMM I couldn't have both in the board so I replicated my DMM in the TL and it was fairly close IMO:

I'd be happy with a DMM as my only pedal :idk:

I'll take a good Analog over anything else.

Get out of here with your logic!

I know the XO is effectively the same thing, but the big box has that mystique! At this point I'm willing to pay the premium for the mojo. I've always wanted a big box, so I figure why not?

It's a recent model, so calibration won't be needed.

I know the TL is more practical, but I spend a lot of time trying to hop to the right preset when I'm just as happy using a decent dBucket setting.

Tap tempo will be missed, but I've got a DD7 I can use, and the PitchFactor has delay, and I can use the DL4 if I need to. Basically I'm covered.

I'm trying to streamline my playing more lately. I've pared down two 2 mild drive pedals, and I'm still on the fence about flipping my PitchFactor, but I need at least one thing around that can get weird.

Well, it seems you have your digital delay and pitches covered really well. Actually I think is kinda redundant to have a Timeline if you have a DD7, PF and a DL4. You definitely need an analog delay ;) (you liked this?)

I would sell the DL4 and DD7 and have a TL + DMM + PF combo. That's actually what I was using before my H9 + DD500 combo for loopers/delays.

DD7 is on perma-loan from my brother. And the DL4 is my forever looper, I like its looper way more than the one on the TL.

If I can swing it though, I will get another TimeLine (or maybe try a Time factor) down the road!
