Found genuinely new, matched, burned in, and guaranteed =C= EL34s at Antique Electronic Supply. A little pricier than the set on Reverb. But if anything goes wrong within 10 days I can send them back. Wont get that with the Reverb seller.

So what's the verdict in these parts on running NOS tubes in boutique amps? I think at least one of my pre-amp tubes is shot so I'm contemplating replacing everything. I think I have a few GE/Mullard 12AX7s kicking around from a Pioneer receiver I've got but I'll have to have them tested. I've looked at some of the stuff made in East Germany (e.g. Phillips EL34s) and seems like it an be had for not too much cash. No experience with any of it though so curious as to how it compares for the average player/listener with the standards that everyone uses these days. I like to think I have a pretty refined ear but no idea if I'd actually be able to tell the difference.

I love running a 60's Philips Holland 12AX7 in my Hellhawk's V1. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy smoother and crisper sounding than a current production tube, but you gotta listen for it. I've used ANOS Tesla EL34s (Czechoslovakia) and ANOS 6CA7s (US) in my Hellhawk as well which were far more articulate and "right" sounding than any modern EL34 I've had in there. I have a set of ANOS 7027As in my V-4, the difference between those tubes and the JJ 7027A is night and day.

Anyone else have any experience in this realm? I may add this to my wishlist for x-mas.

You convinced me. I picked up a quad of Sylvania 7025s which are evidently a smoother (military grade?) version of the 12AX7. Also asked my wife to get me a matched pair of Siemens EL34s. Pretty sure I have a bad preamp tube so it was time.

Unf. I had a black plate RCA 7025. AYY-MAY-ZING sounding. 7025/12AX7A was the ultra high gain ultra low noise designation for a 12AX7 back in the day.

Got my power tubes today, preamp tubes should be in tomorrow. I think I'm going to take my Verellen to Chicago Music Exchange tomorrow to have them installed and the amp biased.

Only been a few minutes (and my cables are giving me fits), but I have to say that the Sylvania 7025s are night and day compared to the JJ 12AX7s. The gain channel is noticeably quieter in terms of background noise.

Can't wait to crank it to see what it really sounds like. Amp tech said he burned them in a bit and the amp was substantially more "musical" sounding to him.

Awesome. Just awesome. Yeah nothing beats a high grade vintage 12AX7. Lower noise floor, higher gain, better high-mid-low balance. You'll be sooooo stoked when you do get to crank 'em!

Going to try to take my rig over to my space today to see how it sounds. Somewhat frustratingly I've had really loud ground noise whenever my stompboxes are in front of the guitar. Need to try to isolate that. Otherwise the amp sounds fab.
