So this is a $200 (student discount) kit from diyribbonmic.com. I built it in a seminar with my recording class and the guy who runs the company. Basically the soldering is pretty much the easy part (though condenser mics are more electrically complicated). Mounting the ribbon diaphragm in between the magnets was a BITCH. It's thinner than human hair, more fragile then wet tissue paper, and has to be parallel to the magnets and as close to them as possible without touching them. It can't be mounted too tightly either!

That mic looks pretty nice, how does it sound?

Sounds very very nice. Very smooth upper-mids response and a nice warmth in the low end. Great for vocals and acoustics, killer when paired with a 57 on a distorted guitar amp. One downside is that it is EXTREMELY QUIET. You need a pretty powerful mic pre to get it up to nominal level.

Aluminum leaf is cheap. You just gotta follow the rule of "don't put it anywhere you wouldn't put your ear." You can leave in front of a cranked Marshall Major for decades, but shouldn't put it too close to a bass amp, kick drum port or un-pop-filtered human voice.
