Your Favourite Bass Overdrive?

Post by ShortShortManatee »

Hi I Love fuzzers,

I've recently become a bass boy in a band for the first time, and am curious about which pedals you guys like to go to for a nice overdrive tone. I'm lovin a Frazz Dazzler for a Fuzz, but feel like there's something out there that will work better than my Bad Monkey for a drive. The cheaper the better, but I'm also open to all suggestions :excellent: :thumb:

I don't know how close the Bad Monkey and the Hardwire CM-2 are (probably pretty close), but the CM-2 is an awesome low gain bass OD and can be picked up for like $50 used. & I'm sure I'll be the first of many to recommend the smallsound/bigsound Mini. It's been my bass overdrive for a couple years now. For just adding some grit or getting into fuzzy territory, I haven't really wanted to try anything else.

the Mini isn't really colored the way a distortion is, though. I'd consider some low gain distortions for that reason, they can add a certian flavor that more "transparent" overdrives won't. If you can find an Ibanez Black Noise for super cheap somewhere, that will sound rad as an overdrive with the gain all the way down. The enclosure/footswitch will certainly suck, but it sounds awesome.

I really <3 my mtl positive on bass. It's a hot cake cloneish thing. It only has two knobs but it is easy to get the sound in my head, which is all I care about.

I do like my Arion Bass Distortion (MDI2 I think), which is more of an overdrive than a distortion in my opinion. I typically use it with less than 40% of the max gain anyway. I have a Mooer OCD clone and I definitely prefer the Arion for bass.

I've got a BAT Black Forest probably arriving today and a SS/BS Mini arriving probably next month so I think I'll get new favourites soon though :).

I picked one of these up the other day and used it on bass last night, pretty happy with it.

If you're looking for something cheap, the Joyo Ultimate Drive works really well for me on bass. Pretty sure some other cheap company has it's name on it as well. You should be able to find it for something like 35 new.

RAT's, OCD's, I really love the Boss SD-1, I used to have one Conky modded that I want back really badly. Also the Fuck/Mini are great if you want that sort of tone? Tubescreamers and things with a mid bump are great if you want a grindier tone, also don't discount a colored clean boost/compressor like the Fairfield Accountant or Wren & Cuff Phat Phuk B

The spaceman saturn V is an always on pedal for me. Lately I usually pair that with something muffy. In the past, I remember really liking the creepy fingers doomidrive

Don't play bass as much as most of these peoples, but I really like OCD esque things. The bad monkey sounds pretty cool, although I wish it carried more low end. I really like the DOD Boneshaker on bass as well. Sounds cool for guitar, but I think it was MADE for bass and it just happens to work with guitar.
Good Deal List: bearbeams, pena_55, sonidero, greyscales, ChetMagongalo, xchristophex, Monkey Boy, krautrocker, osbornkt
