Danelectro reissues
I played a U2 at a shop yesterday and liked it a lot. They were asking a bit more than I wanted to pay so I may keep my eyes open for stuff on craigslist. The one in the shop was a reissue, I'm not sure when, and the tuners had been upgraded, I think. They were metal - not the older plastic tipped style of the vintage ones.
It also had the nicer bridge with individual string saddles. Are the 90s reissues better than the current ones?

Re: Danelectro reissues
i have a newish made in china reissue dc '59. bought it used so not totally sure whats original but for what i paid its great. it's my standard tuning guitar. pretty versatile, decent frets, and the pickups are so rad. there are lots of them around so wait a real cheap one. i tried to look up the serial number but supposedly the ones on newer danos don't mean anything.
good dealings here:

Re: Danelectro reissues
The 90s ones were godawful junkers, every single one I held or came across my desk when I handled instruments at the gun/pawn shop.
Maybe the newer ones are better?
The low end market has gotten substantially better overall, maybe Danelectro has gotten better since then?
To be fair, the originals were nothing to write home about generally either, some I handled when they were cheapish were alright but they were mostly cult favorite or nostalgia market instruments even thirty years ago.

Not particularly. Conservative businessman, the two never ever go together after all.
He supported the anti-gay marriage prop in California a few years back. So did a bunch of folks. It was their choice.
Doesn't mean the company necessarily supported it (was a personal donation), but it's been blown out of proportion IMO in recent years.

The shop near me has a 90s reissue and a newer one. I went for the 90s first cause it was black and I prefer that over the coppertone of the new one, plus the 90s had the upgraded saddle. The newer one sounded better, acoustically. The 90s have the angled headstock, newer have the older profile.
I may opt for getting a newer one and then replacing the bridge on it. The newer one had the piece-of-wood bridge that doesn't allow for individual string intonation.

I am unsure if this was a factory fuckup or an idiot purchaser, but this came across my desk as a "will you buy this" when I ran the gun shop with a pawn license and we were the only place in a couple hundred miles who would *ever* take instruments.
It was one of the Dano sparkle hell 90s things with built-in effects.

I haven't played one of the new reissues in a few years but I found them underwhelming compared to the 90's stuff [which I liked]rfurtkamp wrote:The 90s ones were godawful junkers, every single one I held or came across my desk when I handled instruments at the gun/pawn shop.

Re: Danelectro reissues
I played some of the new ones a little while ago, they were alright. To me it seems like entry level/intermediate sub $700 guitars became very nice instruments in the late 90s, early 00's but it's been downhill for them for the most part since about 6-7 years ago for most large production makes like Gretsch, Epi, etc. I guess it's kind of a MIK or MIC/SE Asia thing, although the MIC CV squiers are excellent, they seem to be a bit of an exception.

Re: Danelectro reissues
I have a 50th anniversary Danelectro. I paid about $200 for it five(?) years ago, because I had two friends that both owned one and they seemed great sounding guitars. It sounds great, more so when both pickups are on. It's not my main guitar anymore, so I don't feel like upgrading the bridge, and fixing the wiring. I have it for when I want that chimey, jangling guitar.
