I remember in the late '90s when I was giving up on mainstream music, MTV had a commercial they would play all the time featuring Portishead, the Eels, and someone else... Maybe the Breeders. I didn't get any of those bands at the time but they're all among my favorites now.
I wonder if Broadcast would satisfy some of what you're looking for?
